I gotta muddy up the waters here. Yes, most amps with opamps are less than great, but there were exceptions: the 1970s-1980s BGW and SAE pro stuff were and still are brilliant, and most of them had an opamp or two. I listen to both (BGW 750B, SAE 2200) every week in the studio and they manage to unravel all of what's going on, with no grit, glare, or harshness. I picked up an old BGW 100B for little Braun speakers on the TV at home, and it's something of a revelation. When I get around to re-capping it, I'll sub it on my main speakers and see how it compares to a pair of Manley monoblocks. It will be quite different, but I can guarantee it won't be bad.
