SA-100 Fisher on the horns and Heathkit XO-1 (electronic)crossovers? Speakers are 2266H JBL Dual Differential 15" and either Beyma 1.5" horn drivers or JBL 2435J neo/berylium 1.5" drivers. Woofers are rated at 400 watts ea. So something between 200 and 400 wpc is what I am thinking. Thanks for any input. Bobby

The good news is the original is a Nelson Pass design and that they sold what seems like millions of these. This is a very fine sounding amp and since they made and sold so many you can get them relatively cheap. One word to the wise...there is a coupling cap on the input board that is the only instage coupling cap in the whole design. It doesn't matter much for a subwoofer purpose but if you ever use this amp for other purposes replace the coupling capp and put somthing like a WIMA or better in place of it.
The increased transparency will be obvious.
Ed
PS: This is not strictly speaking a Vintage unit but is getting pretty old and is a fine solution for your uses.
We don't shush around here!
Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof

Just go with a subwoofer amp plate. If you are only going to need a crossover at around 200 hz or so why are you going about it the hard way.
charles
where are you getting 200? And Crazy Dave, i bought these used for 2000. The woofers are more than that new. I ain't payin more that 30% of new for anything. BC
The amp plate goes from 25Hz to around 250Hz. the cut off is at 250Hz. Otherwise it goes PRETTY LOW with a lot of HUMPFFF.

have everything else to bi amp with. Plus I am not a big subwoofer fan. If I was I wound have small speakers instead of these 200 pounders in my 13 by 15 living room. Thanks, Bobby
You could look into an older NAD amp. They have very nice bass and can handle power like a vintage amp. Or look around for a pair of Marantz MA-500 monoblocks. They usually sell for around $150 each and are really very good. I always see them on Audiogon.
cruise Audiogon for some ideas.

Eagle, or EKSC, 2A is a good full range amp, but a very good bass amp -- powerful and musical.
Even better would be the Eagle, or EKSC, 400 mono blocs, similar sonics but a few times the power.
"For a nominal service fee,
you can reach nirvana tonight."
Are all good choices.
I use a Mac 2100 as a subwoofer amp driving and AR3a pair set up for woofer only operation. This amp is rated for 105w at 8ohm. Some have reported almost 200wpc before clipping. Powerhouse amp.
Adcom 555 amp Hafler DH200, DH500 Heathkit 1600 would all be good SS amps for subwoofer duty.
Best,
Ross
How much money is available? Do you want new or used?
Bryston and Classe are 2 good "audiophile" brands. I've had lots of success over the years with AVA.

I don't ususlly pay much for amps because so many come my way. I'm just trying to figure out what to look for. Thanks a lot, Bobby
From the link below the 2266H is a pro subwoofer that is only meant to go up to 120Hz. Those 1.5" exit driver are only good down 500hz at best and that is really pushing it. Even if the driver can go that low, the horn will have completely lost directivity by then, unless it is huge. You are going to need something in-between. You will also need some kind of CD horn compensation.
I think you need to think this out more before choosing an amp.
Dave
I'm crossed at 650 though
Where did you find the specs? I could not locate them.
Dave
Dave,
I checked that link, and it goes to the Vertec series of modules. True enough that JBL rates the module using the 2266 woofer to only 120 Hz or so; but is that true of the 15" driver itself? Say in a different enclosure?
Jerry
I am inferring here, because I could not spec the woofer out, but long throw woofer with low FS, don't usually do so well up top. Yes, the JBL could be an exception, but I would want to know before I put in the work and the long green. I suspect he would be better of with something like a 2226 which shorting rings that stays smooth up to 1.6 KHz.
In addition, while 1.5 in. exit (or 1.4 in this case) compression drivers are usually rated down to 500hz, that is not their recommended crossover (see link below, http://www.usspeaker.com/beyma%20CP755nd-1.htm). You can go lower when you’re driving it with a 300B SET, but if you are going to put some power to it, you going to get distortion and maybe failure.
Another problem I did not mention, is if you are going to cross a 500 or above, you will be able to hear the transition if the amps are dissimilar.
I looked into building a 15” + compression drive speaker for quite a while. There is a reason why they pay people to do it. There is a lot to it. Ask Jon Risch of Peavey or Wayne Parham of Pi Speakers.
All that being said, the best cheap amp I know with great low end is an Adcom GFA-555. I have not herd the GFA-555 II but I would expect it to also be a contender. Even better would be a Perreaux.
Dave
a year or 2 now sounding very fine to my ears. I was just going to try bi amping. Thants all. Check out Bentwood Horns Angel series. Thats what I have. Andrew mentions the 2266 as one of the "options" for this speaker. They sound absolutely great to me. I am just wondering what amp will track well with my SA-100 and would otherwise be a good choice. Thanks for all your input, Bobby
I checked out the Angle Series. No question, they did it, and they are charging a lot of money for it. It is a surprise to me! I still recommend the same or similar sounding amp when biamping with that high a crossover. I have tried biamping with dissimilar amps on an ADS 1290 and you could hear the transition.
Dave
If you are looking at that much power then I would have to go with something in the McIntosh line.
I was never a big McIntosh fan, but the strong point happens to be good sound with lots of power. Otherwise I never thought much of McIntosh for low level listening.
charles
figured since the woofers are rated at 400 each I figured I should at least have 200 wpc amp. Hoping not to pay Mac prices too. Thanks, Bobby
