I like vintage JBL stuff but it's got to be the right goods. The Klipsch is a bit easier to service if you need to and it's also likely you can get some that don't need to much work or any at all.
Consider the Hersey or Forte if you can find them for the right price.
Follow Ups:
I second the motion for Fortes. Mine were gamechangers, and took my very average vintage systems to another level with a Sansui 8080DB powering them. Less than $600 total into both, and there's plenty left over for analog and vinyl, or digital and discs/files.
Freedom is the right to discipline yourself.
This is what you were looking for, 12" mirror image JBLs 4411,4412 and I believe 4312, all from JBLs pro lineup, doubt you will find better and within your $600 budget.
These are the best speakers for the money out there if you can find them - I have bought 3 pairs over the years at garage sales and craigslist and the most I've ever paid is $300. Still have a pair that are in my den. And, the best part is that a small 30 watt per channel receiver will make them sound like a million bucks.
Go for the cornwalls used if you have the space
