A local thrift store has a pair of "The Fisher" XP-16 Speakers. Does anyone have any info on these? Are they any good ? These have to be the largest speaker cabinets i've every run into. They must weigh close to 100lbs each. The store is asking $39.00 for the pair, are they worth getting
Thanks

No, you should let me get them!
Seriously, they are probably gone by now!
I remeber the XP-10, XP-15 and XP-18 but not the XP-16. Give the model #s of these early systems represented the size of the woofer, these should be decent. Will probably need to replace the tweeters if using the Hecht dome tweeter; he even said the stuff out there today is better than his design, and the crossover caps as they'll probably be out of spec. For that price you're talking less than a cheap set of CC speakers.
Yes, Yes! and yes

I have a pair of these that I purchased in the early '70's. They basically sound like "mush" using them. Is the problem that they need significant wattage to drive them properly?
If these are what you have, post a pic of the inside. As you can see, the ones in the pic need new surrounds for the woofers for sure and you need to check the other drivers and probably replace the caps in the crossovers.
I'd expect these to sound pretty good with modest power, so if they sound like mush, you have one of more drivers not working or damaged.

Thanks for the reply. I can't upload the photo as the system won't let me.. All of the surrounds are in perfect condition as well as the fabric on each of them. All of the wiring is delivering power to each of the speakers, and all of the speakers do work. Suspect after what you said is that the problem may lie with the crossover caps? Any information on replacing would be appreciated. I also have for XP-9c's on two separate amps and they sound fabulous, set up with a 65" UHD Samsung curved tv!!
This is what they both look like.
