I am currently using a vintage OHM 2 way in the bedroom with a pioneer 323 receiver and philips cd player and wondering what I am missing....will preview some smaller advents today

They are pretty obscure, but when they do come up on eBay they go for cheap. I preferred them to Dynaco A-25's I once had; a very nice sounding classic British bookshelf speaker and easy to drive with vintage amplifiers.
Why, the three I currently own, of course:
1. ADS L-470 (hard to beat $20 at a yard sale)
2. Mission 70MkII
3. Dyna A-25
Find you some little Advent 3's and you'll be surprised how good they sound. I have them and a pair of Original Large Advents in my living room. Awesome for the price.
Funny you should say that. I have a single advent 3 in the garage waiting for a mate. Picked it up for $5 two years ago.......

I was actually looking at those..they've been under "buy now" for quite a while. I have three pairs of Genesis Physics speakers and they hold up to all of my other speakers, and also replaced my modern NHTs in my home theater set up. Whoever buys those Genesis IIs will be very happy I think.

For speakers of a size that will actually fit on a shelf, Snell Type K if you have a sub-woofer or won't notice that you are not noticing the bass because the sound that does come out is so good, smaller advents or Boston A-60 otherwise.
Allison made some very good almost bookshelf sized that are just about as good or better, but they had to go on top of all the shelves because the woofers fire up.
The KEF Reference 101. Someone, one day, will be prying those out of my cold, dead, fingers. Or maybe after that even, like whoever took the book out of Dr. Frankenstein's crypt in "Young Frankenstein". Perhaps it was Frau Blücher? ::insert angry horse whinny here::

have two pairs in rosewood and teak! will play almost any kind of music, exceptional detail and sound reproduction
you wouldnt believe the amount of bass produces, had a lot of visitors think that the speakers they thought were playing were the floorstanders in the back

but I had a nice pair which (as I have posted before) got stolen.
A pr went for $450 or so a while back on AgoN, but I've never seen another pair. A pr of FMI 100's was on ebay local sale. Forgot what they got, but it wasn't that much ($300?).
These were the most dynamic little speakers and blew most others out easily. I had both Rogers LS 3/5a and these in the house at one time and they excelled in different areas.
Funny, now I know Robt. Fulton's relative personally.
Haven't thought about that speaker in a long time. Back in the 70s, a friend put together a quasi Fulton J modular by adding RTR electrostatic tweeters and DIY woofers to his.

if you bought when they came out you are laughing. Sold for $400 Cdn. in the old days. Greatest value-ie appreciation in a bookshelf sized speaker, and one of the best sounds ever. But don't ever put them in a bookshelf. Now one of the most overpriced pieces of vintage available.
Aside from this for small bookshelf speakers with great value I would add Dynaco A25s and Spica TC 50s, even at today's prices.

Oh yes. I had two pairs and now just one.
They didn't sound good in a relatively large room but when I had them in my office with high ceiling about 3 feet off the fron wall, they were ghostly amazing.
And yes, I think they are way over priced driven by the herd mentality of fancy cable buying crowds...especially the group from the other side of the pond driving the price for a nice pair up to $1500 range...
Greetings- Last year I found a near mint pair of JBL 4301B monitors on Craigslist for $60.00 from the original owner. When I first inspected them, the surrounds were fully intact and I commented to the owner that it was highly unusual for the foam to be in such "good shape" after all those years. When I got them home and hooked them up I was priviledged to watch the old surrounds disintegrate before my very eyes.I called up the seller to tell him about about the foam blowing out of the speakers and he actually offered to give me my money back and for me to keep the speakers.I declined his generous offer (I beleive in Karma) and about two weeks later found another pair of JBL, this time a pair of L50 in the original boxes. This pair obviously needed new surrounds but the price was right, he gave them to me. True story/best value. regards, wpod
I am not sure if you are saying you have OHM 2 speakers OR 2 way OHM speakers.
If you have the OHM 2's in your bedroom, your not missing much.
Nice speakers.
On your profile it says OHM E, if that is the case, you can (Imo) go smaller and better at the same time.
Look for, as others have said, Dynaco A25 speakers.....excellent.
There are many others, but the Dyanco's are out there to be found and difficult to get a better speaker for the size and cost.
That is my 2 cents.

I use a pair of Dynaco A25's on bookcases in my bedroom and A10's wall mounted in a speaker matrix. I've had these since the early 70's and have been very happy with them.
That's hard to judge. It really depends where you are and what you have access to. You could pay hundreds of dollars for a sweet pair of ADS 710's or 810's on eBay, pay under 100 at a yard sale, or get them for free from someone who just doesn't want those "old" speakers anymore.
Something like the highly recommended EPI 100 could be free if the foam surrounds are gone, or you could pay if they are done. Many if not all audio "civilians" think that speakers with rotted foam are ruined and worthless.
If I had to start all over from scratch I'd want:
Mid size bookshelf:Something from the ADS 500 series (L500, 520, 570 etc.)
Minispeakers: ADS 200 or 300 series or Visonik David or even RS Minimus 7's
Large bookshelf: ADS L810 and/or AR 2a
Of course, there are lots of other speakers I own and could live with, and plenty of other speakers I might like if I tried them. Just about any quality speaker can be useful in certain situations and especially if the price is right.
One of these days we're gonna have to do a thread for speakers we had and did not like...

Picked up a pair of smaller advents at lunch to preview and if I want purchase for $80.00,surrounds are fine, original tweeters, got em in the trunk for listening tonite...no rush though,thanks for all the ideas.
I did not read through the whole post well enough, but the monitors I posted are the ones I grew up with as a hobbyist.

Early Bose 301 or 301 series II, Boston A60 & A70 & A70 series II, Marantz Imperial 5 & 5G, Genesis 1 & 1+. All in addition to EPI 100 and KLH 17. You mentioned the Smaller Advent, but also consider the Dynaco A25. Also consider the smaller and mid sized ADS models.
Lots and lots of very good sounding 2 ways with smaller cabinets that are suitable for real bookshelves. The original Bose 301 is particularly good since it's designed specifically for horizontal placement.

You're right. I also forgot the AR-15 and it's smaller brethren. The AR-15 was an excellent speaker.

I'd like to add the Avid line.
Not as well known as Advent/KLH/AR/EPI/Genesis....but similar in sound & quality IMO.

Sanman, here's a vote for Sansui's AS-100s. Extremely efficient two-way design. Extracted a nice alnico robustness from a Rotel RX-602. Woofs are direct wired, have hefty alnico magnets, & surrounds are paper, not foam. Just replace stock 4.7uf non-polarized cap, if needed. Bose's 201s are also nice small speakers. KDVS' 14G listening room has been converted into a mini-shrine for a pair of 201s with Technics SU-Z780 amplification.
