Hi,
I just picked up an old EICO RP 100 reel to reel deck. The unit rewinds, fast forwards but will not play. Are these old decks worth Fixing? I can't seem to find anything for reference on ebay or audiogon. Any idea of todays value? I found some info on the asylum as to the original value in the mid 1960's, they were very expensive!
Thank you,
Jeff Cole.

I've got one- the reel spindles are broken though. Worked great intill they did.
I haven't used my RP100 in years but I was always impressed with it when I used it. From what I can recall it would hold its own against any of the other decks I had owned or used such as a Revox G36, various Teacs, a Tandberg 6000X, various Pioneers, etc. Actually the Eico was probably better than most of the other decks. If my memory is correct it is a hybrid unit; has 3 motors ,3 heads, sound on sound, dynamic braking, etc. It rewinds and fast forwards faster than any other deck I have used. I don't think they are worth much but they are definitely worth fixing if you like reel to reel tape decks.
I gots one of those, too! Haven't yet tried it mechanically, and I've had it for years...You can find ads for it and much more vintage R2R at the site below...
all the best,

The bottom line is yes. These were really nice units while in production and were almost the equal of say an Ampex, Ferrograph or Magnacord. They were not cheap and the program was a failure since kit builders were not capable of building them; the level required was closer to a professional tech while the factory built units were beyond the budget of EICO followers. The result was not a large number produced.
