the Surface mount IC's? There are other tools that need to be used to remove the surface mount IC's and other components. Metcal had tweezer like tools that would heat and grab the IC from both side at the same time. They would lift right up perfectly. They come in different sizes and work well.
Also there is a thing called Solder removal paste. You put it on all the leads and use the hot air blower for surface mount component removal. This would blow/move the solder away from all the leads and make the IC or other component ease to lift off without damaging the pads.
Once you have the proper tools, it is easy to remove surface mount components.
So you will need those other tools I have mentioned above along with the hot air warmer under the PCB's when doing the rework.
One other thing you must remember is that you must make sure all that desolder paste is totally cleaned off the board before trying to put on the new part. The desolder paste is conductive and with create a short if not cleaned off properly.

I just want to get the hot air tool. It will do what I need. I first started working with smd back in the early 1990's so I am familiar with them but looking for a hot air vs how I have been working with them.

The hand held or the heater/hot air blower that sits under the component?
that has the blower in the hand held unit. Some have had great success and some have had the unit go out but the manufacture seems to stay on top of it for replacements.
