Ok, I have a 10b, and a Sansui TU-717 What about you?
Follow Ups:
Tuners I presently have in my tuner rack are:Accuphase T100 (2); one mod'd by APS
Philips 6731
Sansui TU-9900

Kenwood 600T (mod'd by APS)
McIntosh MR-80
Luxman T-117
Sony ST-S730ES
Technics ST-9030
Kenood KT-8300
Yamaha CT-7000All are hooked into a mod'd Kenwood KA-7300 integrated amp driving AR-2AX speakers. And of course, the antenna is an APS-9b mounted on my garage with ChannelMaster rotor.
tuna i presently have:harmon kardon citation 18 (modified/refurb'd)
hitachi ht-8000
heathkit aj-1600 (modified/refurb'd)
mcintosh mr65b (modified/refurb'd)
tandberg 3001a (2 - one refurb'd)

b&o beogram 5000
revox b261
stromberg carlson sr-445
restek d1
klein & hummel/saba ts 2000
technics st-8600
kenwood kt5500of the above, i haven't yet tried the k&h/saba, as it's still enroute. the stromberg needs a refurb & sounds crappy. (the seller lied about this - arrrrgh!) the kenwood kt5500 is just 'ok' - on par w/the adcom gft-1a, kenwood kt-9900, mcintosh mr77 & the m-d ft-101, imo... certainly not up to the sonic level of the others. the mac mr65b needs a really strong signal, or forget it - too noisy.
all the others sound great, w/relatively minor differences between them, really... the hk citation 18 stands out as being truly exceptional. any would be fine for long-term listening, imo. the philips 186, restek d1, & b&o 5000 need the de-emphasis changed from 50 to 75us to sound their best in n. america; i have yust received the info on the restek, & i'm trying to get info for the other two.
but... i think it may be time to thin the school... ;~)
tuna that i have tried, liked, but sold anyway:
(recent):
sansui tu-517
sansui tu-719
sansui tu-9900
(a while back):
revox b760
technics st-9600 (dark green/brown wersion of my st-8600)
meridian 204
yamaha t-2
adcom gft-1a (my 1st tuna - i liked it at the time, but now know it's only average)tuna that i tried but was not all that impressed with:
kenwood kt-9900 (beautiful, but needs mods to sound good, imo)
mcintosh mr77 (complete refurb; mac s/s tuna is highly over-rated, imo)
tandberg 3011a (worse than the adcom gft-1a i had at the time)

Sansui TU-9900The Sherwood 3000 is excellent as is the Fisher. 9500-II is a solid performer, Luxman I believe to be better and the Sansui TU-9900 is one of the best available out there superb performer. I want to modify the output stages on the Sansui. Low distortion op amp, or discrete and a Buffer on the output line. BUF634 driven by an OP-637,or AD 797. You guys have any suggestions ideas on any of these for modifications.

I mean I've already asked ONCE.I don't expect you to ALL have an antennna farm/ collection.
But listing all yr tuners w/o even listing what you use for that critical job, is rather like discussing phono stges w/o any reference to the TT/ arm and cartridge, now isn't it?
Even the down-lead matters. RG11 sounds way better than standard coax, quieter AND nicer, Why? a better noise figure, see.
A,Y,IWSTWI, I use a tube tuner which needs all the help it can get!? LOL!

I'm a fan. Only tuners I like better than Sansui are tubed.
I think the Fisher is better, but it's a tough call. Mac is much easier to use & tune. Fisher gets AM (and does it well), which is a huge plus for Red Sox games.
Audio Note T-Zero. Real nice.
(too numerous to count... a microbiology term).Well, not really, but there are a few tuners around the house:
Favorite is a Sherwood S-3000 (mono, tubed)
Fisher FM80R (ditto, nice)
Heathkit AJ-41 (tubed, MPX)
(2) EICO HFT-90 (also tubed, not bad)
Radio Craftsmen T-810 (needs help, but lots of potential)
Sansui TU-717 (way overrated, based on this example)
Yamaha CT-610II (not too shabby)
Yamaha T-550 (the essence of medicority... bought this one new)There are a few others (Bell, harman-kardon, e.g.) but I cannot recall the models.
i have a sansui tu717 that is modified by antenna performance. i just did the audio single path/power supply with black gates/auricaps etc. i also have a Dynaco fm-3 that i was lucky enough to get unbuilt awhile ago that i built and got modified by joe currio running 6922's for it's output tubes with solid state rectification amoung other things he did to it. fm is fun!:).
Fully audiophile modded Kenwood Kt 7500. Easily the best sounding tuner I've owned or heard.
ONIX TU-39 which is a handmade British tuner - I think I might be the only one in the states with one. I also have Magnum Dynalab FT-101 which is very decent but can't hold a candle to the ONIX.
Sherwood S-3000,Marantz 115B,Sansui TU-999,Sony 5140 and Yamaha CT-800.
..
.
Some of the best FM sonics I've ever heard! I've done only freshening-up on mine: HEXFRED diodes replaced the weak selenium rectifier (B+ was wayyy off spec), old electrolytic coupling caps replaced by Solen film caps (they were available in the largish values needed), all other electrolytic and molded paper caps replaced too, except for the multisection can, which I may eventually re-gut with Black Gates. Between the good tuner and good local stations, the tuner is one of my most-used pieces of equipment.
:-)they MATTER.

Valve tuners need to be driven very hard to perform well enough to justify them. > 10 times as much signal for full quieting, when they CAN / MIGHT be quieter than many SS tuners.

I'm using a spliter at the end of my Direct TV antenna. This Tuner amazes me. Previously i had Yamaha T-80. There is no contest.
Fisher 1000, Marantz 10B, McIntosh MR78...
what are your comments on the performances of the two? How do you rate the 717(I just bought one; it's on it's way).

TU9900I have an MR-67B that I just sent to Terry DeWick for alignment. I'll post the results when it returns. I expect greatness.
Hi,Just got my McIntosh MAC 1900 serviced by Terry DeWick. Excellent repair and alignment. Like I remember them new. You'll like his work.
Here's my list:Sequerra Model 1

TimboThe Leak has better noise performance, but the Marantz really does sound wonderful. It is detailed, but never strident. Sounds like a good low powered SET amp.
I'm still using the Leak in mono because my Fisher MPX decoder is not working yet. When it is working, the Leak/Fisher combo might sound better than the Marantz.
only time I ever did see a working big transmitter triode, either a 211, or an 845, etc, was in the harmy, in a Bn to Corp level artillery transceiver, arhh that old reserve eqp't. Filled the back of the Landrover. It had VT4C on the box => 211 no?And we were up above the Bulli pass, in WINTER, with a good on-shore breeze to boot. one did warm yr hands, from about a foot away!

Sony ST-730ES (1)
Yamaha T-950 (1)
Musical Fidelity E50 (1) had two, still have one
I've probably got a few others, but these are what came to mind. Sean
>PS.. I almost forgot my most expensive "tuner". It's an HP Spectrum Analyzer. With the right accessories and hooked up to a suitable antenna, you wouldn't believe what you can receive : )
How would you rate your Marantz ST-6000B against some of your other tuners? And what is the "B" designation? Just curious. Thanks!
OK I dont believe you!Which one?
The lux?
Abe, i've never really spent much time with this tuner. I bought it based on a few recommendations, hooked it up to make sure it worked and then had to pull it out of the system very shortly after that. When i had it running, it sounded pretty decent but it was only up and running for a few days at most. I'm sure that with some more time on it, it would sound a bit better. As for the "B", this was something that i added. These came in either Silver or Black and mine is Black : ) Sean

Magnetar
.
I got a H/K 930 in the main system, a H/K 930 in the "B" system. (An integrated receiver, where I use the FM section.)
They are not for sale but the last to go would be the Accupase, especialy the T-100
nt
MY main one isn't really a tuner! it's a formerly simulcast type rcvr (valve of course) by kenwood its a W8, uses 6BM8's in the OP stage which is turned off. We added a Studio 12 MPX kit and a 3 led indicator R/g/Red, and redid everything, including the PSU. Snubbed SS diodes repacing the old metal ones, good modern larger caps bypassed with some film caps. It's therefore got a BIG psu, for a tubed tuner that is.then there's the Akai, AT6?, digital with a b/w switch for AM.
then there's an old analogue Rotel RT324.
then a Yamaha R3 rcvr in the bedroom system.
I have been listening to FM for along time and given that RF performance isn't critical here in Canberra the Kenwood eats all other tuners for brekkie. very nice and very tubey sounding, yes. The wide bandwidth AM is very good too.

I went on a vintage tube tuner orgy several years ago. Must have at least 10? A couple Fisher 50B, two or three Fisher KM-60's, a FM-100B, H.H. Scott 310D and E, 311 D, and a Sony and Pioneer SS. There is probably more, but I have blocked them out of my mind.

I have an MR-78, MR-67, and an MR-71. Just sold an MR-80.These are great tuners and have enjoyed listening over the years. Have had Rich Modafferi go over them with his Mod on my MR-67.
Is the MR-67 mod worth it?How does it compare with the MR-71?
I'm using an MR-67, the mono one with the mux added and tube rectifier and it is easily sounds better than the Sony ST-5000FW and TU9900. I'm wondering what to do with it?
IMHO, yes. I believe it is well worth it. It is expensive at $600.00 but I do not regret it one bit. Wider sound stage, more depth, smooth. My MR-71 does not have RM's mod. I believe I enjoy the sound of the MR-67 more but just my opinion. My MR-78 is also not modded. BTW, my MR-67 is the early version with the red MPX light on the right hand side of the faceplate. You may want to check the Vintage Asylum and do a search for other's opinions on this matter. I am happy with the 67'.
Philips 673.
Picked it up used from Echo Audio in Portland a few years ago. Still had the original plastic over the faceplate. The wood cabinet matches my VPI HW19Jr. oak TT. Sounds and looks fantastic. I'll probably never need to buy another tuner again.
==========
I couldn't resist picking up a second one when I saw this black one.
It's been shipped back to MD right now to have the tuner aligned and to have the audio section upgraded.
I just did this upgrade to my FT11. You will be quite impressed. Very good people at MD.
Can't wait. Just got a call from MD. They left my tuner on over the weekend to "burn it in" and are shipping it back to me today. I should have it in a few days. I will post a follow-up in the reviews section after I've had some time with it.
How did it work out? What did they upgrade? For me it was the Audio section, KimberKable, WBT RCA's and all kinds of shit, plus an alignment and such.
Love the Mac. The Pioneer is in the garage.
,
tesla,I use a McIntosh MX110 tuner/preamp as the tuner in the main (ARC SP10) system. The tuner section is supposed to be similar to an MR-67. I'm shopping for a component tuner now- considering Revox B760 and McIntosh MR74-77-78.
The Scott 330D is all tube mono and refurbished, but it sits on a shelf. Someday it will go in my second (ARC SP8) system.
Cheers,
