Alignment alone, maybe. If it hasn't had electrolytics replaced, considering the age, that should be done at the same time. And that may address the problem. I haven't heard a 717 but they have a good reputation, I would think it would be worth it.

I had a TU-717 and a 917 restored. Great performance and a great looking tuner but both sounded awful.
I was using mostly Marantz tuners at the time and they are known for their sweet sound. However even my cheap dumpster dive digital tuners at the time sounded better.
Thank-you for the input. There was a 717 not too long ago on CL and I was tempted because I had never heard one. Glad now I didn't.
I mentioned this in other posts, have tried maybe a dozen tuners over the years, with my system, preferences etc., Scott 310E is what I ended up choosing.
