Need a quick recommendation on which one of these to purchase. Will be for a purely DX situation so absolute best sound quality is not an issue. Also, no modding will be done thought the Sanyo has had the original audio path capacitors replaced with Elna Silmic II and Nichicon Fine Gold. Also, the original op-amp has been replaced with a socket and Burr Brown OPA2604. All 3 about the same price once shipping is factored in..

Actually a Sony XDR-F1HD would blow the list above away. The best DX tuner I ever used & superior to any vintage beyond a commercial military intelligence gathering tuner. Was $89, now about $200 after Sony discontinued them.
Very much aware of the Sony, just need something to tide me by till I can afford one..decided to get the Sanyo...

Ok. The Protron is much more tuner than the Sansui. Five gains, dual mos-fet & wide/narrow IF with two tight 150kHz IF filters added in narrow. I have no data on the Arcam.
:-)!

I hate commenting on stuff that I have not actually listened to in the recent past. that said as you have a time issue here are some generalizations on the tuners you listed.
a). Proton has a terrible reputation regarding reliability. The one Proton product I did own (the Clock Radio)was a nightmare finally ending up in the trash. Too bad, as when it worked both the sound quality and FM sensitivity were superior.
b). The "T" series of Sanyo higher end products seem to be almost universally well regarded. There may be an availability issue with some proprietary IC's they used in the event you need a repair. I did listen to the tuner, amp and preamp at length years ago and remember liking them in comparison to the comparable Yamaha models of that time period (T1, C2 and B2).
As to the Arcam I don't have a clue. Good Luck and have fun with your choice.
the Tuner Information Center to see if they have any info?

Had a Proton car radio back in the 80s, which was a dx monster. Built by Taiwan's Sangean factory. Pulled in Bay Area F.M. stations like they were local, propogation permitting. Especially up on Oroville Dam, where you could park pre 9/11. Had Schotz noise reduction, which was similar to Carver's Asymmetrical Charge Coupled F.M. Detector, for cleaning up distant reception. Rocked strong for several years, until some anal orifice trashed moi's '77 T-Bird. 73s para Sactown !!!
