Mickey, in a ST70 with a DIYTube board that is heavily based on a HF87 with some tweaks I like a brimar 12ax7's, RCA clear top 12au7's which are used instead of 6sn7's along with a quad of EH 6CA7's. I wish that I had a 10M to try. For my taste I find that the amp sounds better this way then with any of the other driver boards that I've tried including the VTA70. Actually, it sounds way good. I wonder how it would compare to your Eico. I should try a set of EL34's again sometime. It's been awhile and in my older age I'm not as into tube rolling.

Which DIY board are you using? If you use the VTA-70 with the stock resistors,I don't care for it. The HF87 has superior iron to the ST70 as far as I see.I haven't removed the output transformer to do a comparative sweep, driven by my wide bandwidth Rotel amp.
I am still floored by the EH 6CA7s that I have that test in the high 8000s.I am very tempted to order another quad of them with the same test numbers to see if they sound as good or maybe I just have a unique quad.

Mike, it's diytube's board.

It's the only aftermarket board that has measurements etc in it's instructions. Unfortunately, I believe that it's now out print:(. I'm going to post instructions how to change a KTA70board over to it though. Anyway, it sounds much better than the VTA70 to me but I am going to give the VTA a second shot and i'll do your tweaks to it with a spare st70's and see if I was too hard on it.

This is the one put out by Ned Carlson right? The VTA uses a much better quality board material than the others. If you have to pull off a part, you don't lift the trace like on some of the others.

Shannon Parks did it. My VTA board has been though a bit but I think that I can make it work. I have to get some new standoffs though...
