Hi All,
Won a Heath-kit SP-2A Mono Tube Preamplifier over the weekend in pretty good shape. Now I need an Amp! There are two I thought might be a good match. One is a Heath-kit W4AM and the other is a Knight KN632. Any thoughts or suggestions? This will be for a mono(obviously!)78rpm system. TT will be a Dual 1019 or an older Bogen-Presto and the cart is a Stanton 500 I believe. I have too many 78s standing(pun) around that need to be listened to. Thanks as always.
Regards,

Hi Duane,
Contact me off-list, if you're looking for a good single Heath W-4AM.

.
The W5 with the 16309 OPT is prone to failure. The later W5 with the 16458 OPT is generally quite reliable. Both versions of the W5 have a higher than normal PT failure rate IME but the addition of an inrush limiter on the primary helps a lot. Heath knew there were problems and added a "surgistor" at the primary of later versions.
The W4 is sometimes considered to be reliable but is seriously handicapped by a compromised OPT. It tends to spontaneously oscillate with capacitive loads. The W5 is stable under the same loading conditions.
An EICO mono amp would be nice also. The HF-22 uses 6L6 outputs and the HF-35 uses EL-34s.
I will be on the lookout.

I agree with Mike about the Heath Kit W5M an outstanding amp good examples with good tubes can be found for about $600.00.
The Eico HF20 can be found for about $200.00 and with some minor mods is very good. It's kinda a sleeper.
The w4m is very good as is the w5m..I am very fond of both of those and are my based on my tubes which are the Kt66 and 6L6gcs.

That was one I was considering!

I don't know about you but I come across a nembrt of good amps, that were used for center chanel on Agon. It might not be your dream vintage unit but high quality amps seem to come along frequently. If you are patient you will happen upon one. The price is almost give-away. See what turns up.
Steve
So What Amps would you suggest?

You can always find something different but I was suggesting the ones you were looking at..
