I'm getting ready to change the output boards and power supply board with bias adjustment (Audio Regenesis parts) so I figured why not do the driver and output tubes while I'm at it.currently it has JJ tubes that I know nothing about, matched ? age ? etc. It does work but I have a cracked/repaired output board otherwise the amp is OK and original .Does anyone have a recommended brand preference that will perform well with this amp ? Also looking for a decent place to purchase a quad set. I went to a meeting at Upscale Audio on Sunday and he had some, but his prices are just to high for me. I'm not looking for Walmart prices but I am pretty sure I can get them for a lot better prices than he had them for. Thanks ...

Yes!! There are some very specific recommendations I have.
The ST-35 runs the output tubes over the dissipation spec for EL-84s, so I recommend the 6P14P-EB/7189 Russian tubes. Excellent tone, incredible durability - and about $55/quad is all.
For the 7247 the JJ 12DW7 is fine. It's one of the few JJ tubes I stock, they're pretty much problem free once they get past my screening, and have a nice tonal balance in combination with the Russian power tubes.
One thing - with the work you are doing BE SURE to replace the cathode bypass cap, C8D on the factory schematic. I recommend you use a good discrete cap, not a section of the quad can. Of course if you do use the Dave Gillespie boards I'm sure that's handled.
Drop me a note if you need more info.
The Audio Regenesis power supply for the ST-35 is (or soon will be) available with Dave Gillespie's EFB circuit. If the poster is wise enough to buy the EFB board, the tubes will bias at 27 mA instead of the 35 mA of the stock circuit.
I installed the EFB mod in a Dynaco SCA-35, and you had no hesitation selling me a quad of Gold Lion EL-84's, along with a quad of 6P14P. The 6P14P are great tubes, but I must admit that I prefer the sound of the Gold Lions.
If the original poster would clarify which bias system he's going to use, your recommendations may change.
And to the original poster, if you're not getting the EFB bias system, you're making a mistake, in my opinion. You don't HAVE to get the Audio Regenesis version. The EFB is an easy mod to do on your own. But just look at the improvements offered. The information below is for an SCA-35, but the results with the ST-35 are exactly the same. Your amp will sound better, put out more power, with less distortion, and your tubes will last a lot longer too!
I NEVER make a recommendation like that unless I'm sure.
Yes, if the bias current is reduced the Genalex are fine. Otherwise they are not!
My reply probably should have been directed at IEaudiodude and not you. No offence intended!
No offense taken!
I am going to be using the board From Audio Regenesis, partly because of the EFB circuit and I like the idea of a new more modern power supply board all together and ready to go.
A fresh power supply will help assure your amp will live a long and happy life. The EFB circuit will assure your tubes will do the same, and sound better doing it.
I can't guarantee that you'll like the Gold Lion EL-84 better than the 6P14P, as I do. But it's nice to know you'll have that option available with the lower biasing the EFB will provide.
Good luck, and enjoy your music.
