It is getting pretty close to retube time for my Quicksilver Silver 60's. Right now I am using the JJ E34L's which sound pretty good. I'm just wondering if the Mullard's or the SED's would be an improvemnt or just be different. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have tried the JJ E34L's, the Winged C's, Valve Arts, Shugang (stock in my VAC Avatar,, but right now I'm using the new Tung Sol's which I like very much because of punch they give. Second would be the Valve Arts, a good balance between warm midrange and top and bottom end, the Winged C's had a midrange to die for, but lacked extension, and the JJ's seemed a good all around tube with extension on both ends, but for me it's mainly the midrange. Of course this is my subjective opinion, but the bottom line is try what you can.
I have a pair of Silver sixties and I currently run either the JJ kt77's or Cryo treated Vave Art EL34b's. JJ's have better bass and upper freq. but the Valve Art have more mids and have a good balance. Thought the JJ EL34l's had a bit too much midrange which made them sound a little murky compared to the the others..... Hope this helps?
Did you have the the JJ E34L or the JJ EL34? From what I understand they are not the same tube and sound very different.
Yes. The JJ E34L can dissipate more power than the JJ EL34. The E34L should be biased a bit hotter than a standard EL34. In my experience, the JJ EL34 does not sound that good. The Svetlana (=C=) EL34 is better. Have you ever tried the 1970's Tesla E34L?
Sry to intrude. Carry on!
How about some JJ kt77s or Genelex kt77s? Get them from Jim mcshane or Steve at virginia audio tubes if you want them properly matched.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.

I just got through replacing OEM EL34's in a 1994 Matchless guitar amp. I tried both the JJ E34L and the Svetlana (=C=) EL34, both 1995 vintage tubes. The amp is push-pull, two EL34's, cathode biased, Class "A".
The JJ E34L had a better bass, maybe a lot is due to hotter idle bias of the E34L type tube over the standard EL34. If your amp is FIXED BIASED, you'll need to bias an EL34 slightly cooler (more over-biased) than the E34L (whether they are Tesla or JJ made).
The midrange of the E34L seemed warmer to me, than the Svetlana EL34. More of the classic Mullard xf1 sound (to me, at least). The high frequencies were more rolled-off with the JJ versus the Svetlanas. High notes were definitely cleaner with the Svets.
The Svetlana seemed to separate the notes and overtones better. A bit cleaner. Kinda like a 6CA7-like tone with notes coming off the bridge pickup. But, I like good neck pickup tone and the JJ E34L was better in this amp.
HTH, somewhat. :^)
I'm using the Svetlana EL34 Winged C.Awesome tube, just gets it right and inexpensive.
I like the wing Cs to..I will be honest,my xf2s take a back seat to the wing Cs.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.
I didnt like the Winged C or EH as much as the JJEL34L. Preferred the Groove Tubes EL34M Mullard copy to both.
I had the Mullards and didn't care for them at all. I found them dull, closed in, no life.
The SED winded "C" are very nice.
The vintage Mullard tubes subsequently open up if you have patience...I admit they are not good in some gear...
These are not vintage Mullards I am talking about, these are the reissue ones.
I do have some vintage mullards and they are much better than the reissue.
Are you talking about the New Sensor Mullard or the Groove Tubes Mullard copy? I have not tried the New Sensor version, and not heard many good things about it.
I believe it was the New Sensor Mullard version. The box says Mullard, not GT.
The general thinking about the JJE34L is absolutely true. I have the first Phillips 1970s attempt at a Mullard Xf2 "reissue" . These Phillips tubes they sound better than the Mullard 1960s Xf1s to my ears. Beleive it or not a fine ready to go burned in quad of XF1s lost to a set of JJ E34L Blue Glass in an Audio Group shootout.
I had using the JJ Blue glass E34L religiously until I heard two Russian output tubes. I thought the Russian products never sounded very good at all being a big mid range devotee. The tube that I now prefer in my current amps at any rate in every way, turns out to be an Electro Harmonics fat bottle style 6CA7.
I also took out a bunch Sovteks (pretty much toast on life support) out of my brand new but used Jadis DA60. I knew it can use KT-88s so I had Jim match up an octet of the Gold Lion reissues. They are doing an incredibly good job but obviously not all amps are as flexible.
It seems no one is sure about the Mullard reissues you have and I have no wisdom to impart.
I do have a very good set of Svetlanas which are to my ears very nice. However they tend towards being little lightwieght for my taste.
I plan on replacing the 6CA7s with only 6CA7s unless the Gold lion KT-77 behaves less like the fourth of July JJs. One of these Roman Candles melted a ?Teflon socket, took out a resistor and I forget what else. It did this when virtually new just arced and blew.
I heard they also misbehave in the monoblocks I currently have (and really like). This info I got from that company's former distributor and old pal. They are Opera Consonance. Mine are one of their best efforts Cyber 800 Monos (at landed cost they are unreal but I submit they sound great IMHO at any price).
If I can find the remaining 3 JJ KT-77s and crispy Sovteks they are free + actual shipping to the first e-mail. Some of the goods mentioned can be wrestled away for a fee. I will put them up in the classifieds for you.
Thanks for your thoughts on the different EL34 tubes, sounds like you have tried a few of them.
I wanted to try the JJ KT77 but the reliability issues always held me back. It is to bad and I hope they fix the problem in the future, but it's not looking good so far.
Never tried the Electro Harmonics fat bottle style 6CA7, but I guess I half to put that on my list of tubes to try.
I did have a Quad of GL KT88 off Jim when I had my other amp and they were very nice, but someone in Chicago is enjoying that now.
