hi,
I'm just looking around for new amps for my Altec 604H speakers.
I'd like to go for the McIntosh MC30 or MC60. Of course there is no opportunity to listen both amps at the same time. It would be nice to get first suggestions about their differences - especially the Mc30 uses the 1614 tubes and the MC60 comes with Kt88/6550. Also the MC60 has two rectifier tubes. To be honest, I don't really believe in the Kt88/6550 tubes ...
The MACs should replace an integrated amp with 845 tubes. The ideal preamp would be a McIntosh C20
probably there are any person who had the chance to audit both amps or even have owned the MC30 and the MC60.
Thanks for reply and best.

thanks for respond ...
my altecs are gpa's with ferrite and have about 99db. currently I use a new audio frontiers integrated single ended with 2x 845 tubes. it's a special edition item that delivers 2x 25 watt. honestly the 845 tubes are a little bit "thick" for my taste. before I had otl monos with 8x 6c33c tubes - and I'd like to come back to their magic sonic - but without the huge effort, the otl amps needed. hopefully the match mcintosh c20 / mc30 will bring me back home. also they would fit perfectly to my mr67 and garrard 301.
main problem would be, to get a really near mint pair of mc30 (or mc60) - probably you might have any good bets where I could find them beside the auction-marked. however in germany somebody offers a re-built pair of mc30 that is for 235v - but was there ever an european version built by mcintosh in the 50/60s? never the less the asking price for this pair is close to 4.000$.
thanks and best,
McIntosh MC30 or MC60 - which one is superior
Thats a tough call..I have 6 mc60s and 4 are upgraded with motorruns and pio caps because you can stuff 250uf worth of motorruns under each mc60 and you use tie down straps.
You have very efficient speakers so the mc30 will suffice however,if you ever decide to run more power hungry speakers such as ESLs, which many horn guys do at one time or another, the mc60s will be a premium. The amps are basically a lot alike in that they use the same driver tube complement and a 5u4 rect only the mc60s use 2.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.
I have never heard a 30 or a 60, but have owned a pair of 40s for the last 3 or 4 years. I also use them to drive a pair of Altec 604-8g's. With the Altecs being near 100db speakers, I find I rarely use more than 2 or 3 watts . I use a CJ preamp, so I can't comment directly on your preamp query.
I can say that the McIntosh/Altec is an excellent match. Personally if I had a choice, I would choose a MC30 or 225 if I was to do it over again. I just happened to run across a great local deal on the 40s.
I know this isn't exactly matching your question, but thought I could give a little response.
Being that the 1614 is a metal bottled tube many people use other varieties of the 6L6 in their MC30s.
I know that the MC30 is Steve Hoffmans favorite MC amp. He's got a well trained ear that man so I do trust his opinion.
According to Mike Samra though when the MC60s are properly rebuilt they sound quite nice as well.
I guess it depends on the efficiency of your speakers and the amount of power you need to give you the listening levels that you desire for the type of music you listen to.
I'm wanting to pick up some MC amps as well and have been contemplating the same question. Would be nice to have both lol!
I've actually been considering the MC225 7591 amp as well. According to some people it is the best sounding tube amp Mac made.
Cheers
Lar
FWIW, I own a pair of MC30s, a MC240 and a MC275 mIV. The MC30 has a magic that can be heard immediately and it's remarkable.
The MC275 has tighter and more controlled bass. The MC240 is between the two. I've driven all three with both MX110 and M22 preamps. Same results.
My main listening room is rather large and I have Spendor c8es in it. I never feel like the MC30s were underpowered.
