I bought a quad of kt-88sc (solid plate version) tubes the other day how many hrs do I need before this tube starts to open up? I have about 5 to 6 hrs on them so far. They don't have to much air on top and are very warm..Will they improve with time?? any info will be appreciated..
Follow Ups:
I run the Penta KT88SC on my Conrad Johnson 11A. They are very warm and a little too much on the bass compare to that of the GEC KT88. I used different input tubes to compensate the warmness of this Penta KT88SC, and to make the sound more neutral. Now they sound about 95% similar to that of the GEC KT88, but with a fraction of their price.
I am currently using the Penta Labs KT-88sc and couldn't be happier. I have an old Rogue M-120 Magnum Mono Blocks in Triode mode. They are replacing winged C KT-88's, which before them were EH 6550's. The EH 6550 were nothing too spectacular perhaps a bit bright and thin in the bass. The winged C's were a step up with better bass, more power and a great midrange. I switched to the Penta Labs KT-88sc and from the first note I dropped my jaw. My amps at 60 watts had much more ease with them. I have around 100 hours and they get better each day. They were constricted/compressed/jumbled but after a week of average listening they began to open up.
I noticed the same thing with the Shuguang/Valve Art KT88s (3-hole) in my SLAM-100s, and after about 4-5 days solid playing they opened up a bit but I was never quite satisfied with them.I just got a set of the KT88SC, and they were very much different from the get go. I now have about 50 hours on them and they sound great and are becoming more stable in their bias, tighter bass and more extended sounding.

What kind of amp are you using them in? It takes about 70 hours to really max but you should notice detail from the get go and it will get smoother as they age and become more and more accurate and the top end will be silky.
A primaluna prologue 3.. I listen this morning and they were getting better I ran them all night..
Mine sounded great right away on my PL 5. If they have smoothed out it's not a whold lot..maybe a little warmer after some hours. Great resolution from the start.
what are you using for input tubes in the pl-5 I have a pl-3
Mazda Chrome 12ax7 and Radiotechnigue 12au7. Both nos from Upscale and per Kevins reccomendation.
did you have sed el-e4's prior to the kt-88s what was the difference that you heard between the kt-88's and the se el-e4's
