Follow Ups:
If you feed the CT and parallel the ends you effectively put two reverse wound coils in parallel and will end up with only the DCR of the windings as a load.

yeah thanks after a bit I thought about it and came to the same conclusion
but still why the center tap?

yup... wrt the center tap the DC currents are out of phase with each other so they null to 0 and the inverted nature of the AC signals allows them to add.

Oops that center tap I thought was a center tap, turns out its suppose to be connected to ground!
I have never seen a choke with a shield.
I'm trying to think of an application where the CT of a choke would be connected to ground and the only one I can come up with would be in the tail of PP cathode followers. However since B+ is AC ground I guess that counts too.
