One of the features I want to add to future projects is the ability to use either 12V or 6V IDHT octals. I think the easiest way to accomplish this is to use a 12V switcher attached to a 6V DC-DC converter. Switching between the two outputs would provide the two voltages with very little heat and good regulation. Anyone tried these DC-DC step-down converters for filaments?

A simple switch might be a whole lot easier, cheaper, better..
Two six volt heaters in series is the same thing as two twelve volt heaters in parallel.
Well, a 12V switcher is the simplest, cheapest way to obtain regulated DC. And the 12V-6V converter adds less than $1.00 to the cost. This method also eliminates some switching complexity. With both voltages available, a single SPDT switch can do the job. I'm not sure the series/parallel approach has much advantage in the long run.

Interesting. Running tests will tell if it makes the job.
I'll order a couple 12V/5A switchers and the step-down converters. I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work. If there's a problem with the converters, a LM317 or similar can regulate down from the 12.6V switcher at very little additional cost.
Another aspect of all this that I'd like to explore is the susceptibility of small signal IDHTs to ultrasonic AC on the filaments. It would be useful to know this for the purpose of applying high freuqency AC to IDHT filaments in amps where a DHT output is already in place.

Sounds interesting. Please let use know how it turns out.
Geeeez, looks like you would need to do the soldering under a microscope!
