Matthew really slapped us in the back of the head. We were without power for two days (some folks STILL are) and we just got internet service back this morning.
I have gone through all the suggestions regarding the hum issues, and have got rid of most of it in both the preamp and amp by changing the 26 tubes in both one at a time until the hum went away. For some reason the globe 26's seem to be more likely to cause hum than the st style.
There is still a tiny bit of buzz left, but I am not going to worry about that until I get rid of the rats nest that is the bread board wiring. Would not be surprised if that gets rid of it.
Sooooo, the next step is to bread board the other channel and make sure I still think it is the bee's knees. I may also invest in a couple of GM-70's to give them a try before committing to a build with the 845's.
Thanks for all help folks, I really do appreciate it.

I've gotten calls from family and friends, checking to see if I was OK. I really didn't understand why all the concern since all we had was a night of rain, and just enough wind to blow my trash can over.
It turns out there's a city in North Carolina with the same name as the city I live near in South Carolina, and the one in NC is getting all the flooding.
Glad to hear you're safe and sound.
Thanks. Glad you got spared the worst of it. In some places it got ugly.
It's really awful not to have electricity. One time we lost power in the summer, had to go to a motel just to escape the Texas heat. Hope everything returns to normal for you quickly!

This one cinched it for me; I will be buying a generator before long in preparation for winter storms. We are on a well, so we had no water either. Enough of that nonsense!

I switched between generator and inverters I had on hand.
We were less than two miles from the beach in N Fla.
We had close to 100mph gusts
You definitely got hit harder than we did I think. We topped out at about 60 mph on the gusts. It was still strong enough to knock down a lot of trees into power lines and such. They are still cleaning things up.
