That's more or less what I was picturing but it seems nobody makes good ones anymore! :)
I picked up a pair of these on eBay... Plan is to hook them up
So the amp not in use sees an 8 ohm resistor.

I did the same with my Hammond organ, added 10 ohm resistors in a switchable network that lets me use phones. I used a rotary switch because I needed three positions, and I have a good selection of rotaries in my stash. I really doubt those Chinese toggles are capable of the ultra-low contact resistance desired for hi-fi use. If you're not happy with them, take a look at Nebraska Surplus. Their switches are almost all US made, and many have silver contacts.

They do look pretty robust. I will put 1A through them and check voltage drop with a sensitive VTVM. Similar US made switches claim 10m ohms, and the Chinese ones look fairly similar, and we're really cheap!
I agree with you though US made stuff is almost always better.
