The 115VAC tap on the Hammond 272DX power transformer is working just fine. The problem is that I am getting about 122VAC from my wall and I would therefore, like to use the 125VAC tap on the Hammond.Per the 272HDX schematic, the white wire goes to neutral and the user has a choice for hot between black (125V) and grey (115V). The grey 115V works fine, albiet too much voltage for my needs. So, I switched the grey and black wires. The black wire does not work. No sound out of the amp. tubes don't heat up.
Thoughts?
UPDATE: I TOOK APART THE TRANSFORMER AND REPLACED THE 115, 125 AND NEUTRAL WIRES. THIS CURED THE ISSUE. IT IS WORKING WELL.
I MUST ADD, I DISCOVERED HOW CHEAP THESE TRANSFORMER ARE MADE. THEY DO A VERY POOR JOB SOLDERING THE WIRE THEY USE IS BOTTOM OF THE BARREL. I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO SAY THE LEAST.

Do you have the specs on it from Hammond? What measurements have you made on this wire to determine it's electrical characteristics - at the intended 60hz power supply application?
Have you done any metallurgy tests on the wire?
How about the plastics used in the insulation?
As echoed by Triode Kingdom, I would suggest you spend more time on learning how these circuits actually work and how to improve them based on proven electrical engineering knowledge.
You are wasting your time second guessing the electrical engineers at Hammond and Triad who have many years of theory and practical engineering knowledge over you.
I have used many, many Hammond transformers for over 20 years, both professionally and as a hobbyist. I have never once received a defective unit nor have I ever found any problem with the factory attached wiring.

Because a real electrical engineer knows that even used wire pulled out of a trash can is still quite usable depending of course on the insulation condition. Aged copper and can always be restored!
It's the audiophool that believes in the sonic qualities aged copper for better or worse.
excellent post. intelligent..
Lately I have been getting my hookup wire out of Belden multi-conductor cable scraps. I have about 20 feet of 39 conductor 22awg cable.
Good hookup wire, and I mean good as in insulation that does not creep when soldered, is getting expensive. Scrap multi-conductor cable can be found very cheap and it;s good wire inside.
But you said there was continuity. That doesn't sound like bad solder. Aren't you one of the people who like to butcher component leads? Seriously, there are so many other things to spend your time on, many of which have the potential to actually improve the sound. I guess nothing's as cheap as wire and solder though. No need to type in caps, by the way. It's just harder to read. Use bold or italics if you really think emphasis is needed.

Finkle is Einhorn, Einhorn is Finkle
what did you replace the wire with?
I used 2 strands of 14 Gauge silver coated copper.
on each one?
If you're sure of your mains wiring, you'll need to test the Hammond with an Ohmmeter. The white, gray and black wires should all have continuity. If not, the transformer is defective.

I just checked, all three wires DO have continuity. Any other thoughts?
2 alternatives in case the 125V tap is not working:
1. put in a #47 light bulb after the fuse to reduce voltage by 6V.
2. get a new transformer. In your opinion, Mr. Triode_Kingdom, is the power transformer a critical component that should be updgraded from a Hammond product? Or is Hammond as good as it gets? I have Hashimoto OPTs and wondering if a Hashimoto PT, or other brand, would have sonic improvements.
Did you unsolder all the leads before measuring with the ohmmeter? If so, you've connected something wrong. Inserting any resistance in series (like a lamp filament) will degrade regulation. Some people use a bucking transformer, which has less negative effect. If you want to discuss Hammond vs other brands, that should really be a different thread.

Statistically, it's most likely you made a bad solder joint. Just sayin' ... :^)
Paul, you were correct. Except, it was a bad solder job by Hammond. See my update to the original post.
unplug EVERYTHING and check resistance of primary across white and black. should be 2.869 ohm + or - 20% at room temp, according to link
