I'm a bass player and I started work converting my Selmer Treble 'n Bass to a Bassman circuit. Paused for now. I have a buddy who uses the circuit for his guitar and has built 3 Bassman clones, with loads of experiments.
We listened to a variety of rectifiers and picked out the 5V3-A as the best of them. Hope it helps.
Follow Ups:
5V3A is a directly heated ( no cathode ) rectifier, and , it will give a bit higher VDC out than a 5U4G, etc.Additionally, a 5V3A will have less voltage drop, for a change in current ( step test ) than a 5U4 variety, or, one of the soggiest, a 5R4 variety. So 5V3A has better regulation.
I like that 5V3A rectifier in my DIY SET amps, but today, I mostly use a Tung Sol 5U4GB in my 45 SET.

...well, actually in a dh anything, the filament/heater is simultaneously the cathode too. LOL
Thanks for the tip! Just wondering, did you try two 5U4s like the early Bassman used?
