Hello,
I am considering attempting to build a PAS3X clone. I am thinking of using one of the many ready made PCB sets, I would not be including any tone control options so I really do not want to use an old PAS chassis as the base. Has any done this and can share their experience? Are there any recommendations for an off the shelf case that would be practical for this project?
Thanks!
Alan

Tim,
If you want to go down that route, I suspect the "best" way is a HIGH current DPDT switch, with silver contacts, for each channel between the amp's speaker connections and the cabling to the speakers. Adding an inverting "unity" gain stage of amplification to the small signal circuitry (tape monitor loop, etc.) could be quite counter productive.

For a 4 pole dual throw relay of high power.
How do I tell which of these is a dual throw relay?
What are the contacts made from?
If I do go down this '3-way tower of sphere's path' I will need 4 x 2 wires for Left and Right channels (the 4th to allow for subs - an 8PDPDT?).
Let's not worry about the differential delay to the L minus R rears - IE derived hafler ala Linkwitz!
What do the terms in the search mean?

to a 3-way of spheres, (plus distributed subs?) I'll simply take out the current HP only xovers and put in another 4pdt relay, and 4 more in and out tags to solder to!

Tim, could you accomplish your goal using one of the line level lundahl transformer, possibly at the input or your power amp? Might be a less complicated solution than switching so many speaker level lines>

I had a few of them and they are OK sounding as compared to others out there. If memory serves me Joe Curcio from Curcio Audio redid the RIAA section of the phono circuit and many seem to think it is a very large improvement over the original. Tubes4hifi.com also has a nice kit version of that preamp.
But for my money and ears I would go to octals and the one that comes to mind is the JE Labs phono and line stage(all in one if you like) but you have to do the layout for the chassis and do point to point wiring. It is very simple as there are no real amount of parts involved. I don't know of anyone having a board for the octal preamp.
Another that comes to mind is the Hagerman which is highly regarded. It can be built with octals. John Broskie from Tubecad has a real nice preamp. It is the Aikido which got some real good responses. Bottlehead as another suggested but the chassis is a bit too simple for my tastes.
You do have choices that in my opinion, is much more appealing sonically than a Pas 3X.
As for chassis? There is a guy on Ebay that has some real nice ones for very little $$$$$$$$$$$. Just do a search on Ebay or for that matter Google for electronics chassis. There is plenty to choose from. Some even come lettered to your liking.

Here's a link to a kit, chassis and all.
I would clone something else.
Thanks NEF, Didn't really address the question but hey what the ell.
May I ask why you want to "clone" a circuit of dubious merit?
Do you need a phono section? Do you need a line stage with gain? Many (most?) power amps require less than 2 VRMS of drive for full power O/P. That means the max. 2 VRMS O/P of a "standard" CDP will drive the power amps into clipping.

Yes I need a phono stage and I need to switch between a TT ( with a AT440 Ml)a Music hall CDP (tons of gain)an FM1 tuner. So I need a preamp.
I did a SPICE sim of the PAS3 phono section a few years ago. If memory serves, gain distribution of the original design was very poor. I'd look for something else to build, maybe a Bottlehead if you want a kit.

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
You definitely need a phono preamp. However, a volume control, buffered or unbuffered, plus source selection capability rates to be all that's necessary in the line section.
