Am planning the JC Morrison 6L6SE amp and am wondering which output transformer to use since the recommended one is no longer available. How do people rate Hammond 125E, 125ESE, 1627, Magnequest, Electraprint, etc? I'm hoping to spend <$150 each, though could go higher if it will sound a lot better.
Follow Ups:
This is an ultralinear design, so you must have UL taps available with whichever OPT you choose. To the best of my knowledge, most SE OPTs do not have UL taps.JC specifically recommends the Magnequest with UL taps...the simplest and safest approach when building an amp that someone else designed is to avoid replacing/substituting parts.
1627SE has 40% taps (nt).

Take a look at:

That's a 1627SE in my KT88 SE-UL. (~12Watts)
Sounds good to me. Lots of bass. Good highs and mids. Since I can only compare it to push-pull such as my Dynaco MKiii's all I can say is that I like it better for low to mid level listening. The MKiii's have more power and punch but they really can't keep up in terms of detail and more "life like" music. (Push-Pull vs SE??)Since the Hammond has an isolated 4ohm tap and I'm using it at about 1/2 power I opted to use the isolated secondary as cathode feedback for the power stage. I think that it really improved the overall sound.
Just my 2 cents.
Very nice. Which Hammond power transformer did you use?
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU.The power supply was a carry-over from the breadboard. I found that a B+ of about 400V sounded best however the transformer is a 370HX (550V ct @ 200mA) so I pushed it. My line runs around 126Vac which I ran on the 110V tap (NOT the 120V). With ss diodes and filtering (CLC) you get a B+ of 410V. The added benefit was now I could use the 5V (Now 6.2V @ no load) to run the front end 6SL7 and the other 6.3V (Now with resistors) to run the KT88/KT90.
For a breadboard that's fine. I'll run it that way for a couple of days, maybe a week or two. That was about a year and a half ago.DON'T DO THIS!
I now have it apart again. This time I'm changing to 372JX (600V ct @ 250mA to get a proper 400V) and I want to play with the front end. First up will be a cascode amp with octals or maybe even try 76's. Next I'll try to get a LL1660/10mA IT to work. (I've had a pair for over a year.) Then I plan to select one design and turn it into a "real" amp.
Too many projects and too many things to try.
I will say that despite the abuse, the 370HX performed well. It really didn't run too hot and didn't hum/buzz. Lucky? Maybe. I have used the 200 series and will not use them for anything but breadboards. Way too much buzz.
Take care.
he's not only using a tetrode in SE but he's using NFB and liking it!!!

I know at some point I'll have to see the light and go true SET. DHT SET for that matter. Maybe even join the sub-Watt club. But, for now, it all falls under the category of ..."I may be sick.....but I know what I like."
In the meantime, I'll just sit back and enjoy my dementia.
HEy-Hey!!!,
after yanking on your chain, just had to say that I heard one of the Decware SV83 SE amps, with some nice speakers and was I ever shocked. Nice sparkling little amp. Going to have to build a few of those for guitar parctice amps with another gainstage maybe. Chicken power, or maybe Mouse power, though with 100 dB/1W-1M I can probably do Flea power.
regards and good llistening,
Douglas
I'm using 5v6 in se ul mode with feedback and love it as well., and i'm serious.
I prefer it to some of the popular dht's.My flamesuit is on and activated :-)

Hi tubefever!I've got the 1627SE in my 2A3 and it's good iron (better sounding by far than the iron in my JoLida 202); the bass response is solid, and there're no weaknesses anywhere else as far as I'm concerned.
Haven't tried the 125ESE yet; it's in store for my upcoming 6AQ5 though, so it should be an interesting comparison.
All the best,
Morse
