Hi, goblin141:
You obviously need to replace the pinch roller in the AKAI M-8. Pinch rollers are supposed to be of a uniform surface and by now, this old machine could use a replacement. Good luck finding one!

I finally found a picture online. The cracking is so uniform and only where the tape runs I thought they made theirs different. Finding one is going to be tough. Thanks Wes
There shouldn't be any cracks. Sounds like the "rubber compound" has dried and deteriorated. There's a source that I've seen mentioned here a few times, and I'm darned if I can remember it, but it's something like "rollers dot com", with some guy's name at the beginning. If you gogle that, it'll probably come up.

"Found it." ;)

You should also try googling a guy in Texas who has a large stock of r-2-r machines and parts. Once again, I can't remember the name, but I think he's in the Houston area. Try "reel to reel vintage" or similar searches, he'll come up.
