Hi, Harry:
Sounds to me like a situation where the brake band on that reel platform has seized. It happens a lot on older ReVox A-77s. Even ReVox recommended disassembly to remove the reel hub itself (held by three screws from the top of the reel platform itself). You have to remove the entire top plate to do the rest, but that is not difficult at all.
So, pop off the top upper plate, loosen and remove the three or more screws which hold down the problematic reel platter, expand the metal brake band and clean the metal surface on the band. Remove the entire reel platform and brake band. Take the brake portion of the reel platform, sometimes covered in a white or grayish-white fabric, and clean it carefully with denatured alcohol, let dry.
The original adhesive which binds the fabric to the brake hub often times gets sticky or just ooses gunk which causes it to seize against the brake band.
Consult the web for further information regarding BAKING the brake hub at a particular temperature in a toaster oven (a CLEAN toaster oven, please!) for the recommended time. Let cool down, reassemble and try again to see if it does not seize to the brake band.

That's what I said. ;)
Good to see you post, Richard! Kinda wondered what happened to you.
Actually, I haven't seen brake bands completely seize up, although you've probably seen a lot more A77s than I have. I HAVE seen them too loose, too tight, worn out, spilling tape, stretching tape. This, along with the difficulty with editing, the lack of a full logic transport, and the lack of balanced inputs, are my only four complaints about the A77. Otherwise, it's a workhorse with great sonics and reliability!

Thanks guys for that information.I do have the orginal service manual for the A77 and i will follow up there...as iam not too mechanical with these things i may seek out a pro to do the job.....thanks again for the reply....Cheers Harry
First: Check to be sure that you don't have the reel motors switch turned off!!! ;)Otherwise...
It's easy enough to open the back, but I think all you'll see (that's useful) is the brake band. I suppose it's possible that it might have seized up, but I've never heard of that before. (Edit: Although, the brake bands DO need occasional adjusting or replacing... it might be time.)
Best to contact a Studer/Revox tech such as Steve Smith or others in the Nashville area. Steve was in Madison, TN about ten years ago when he fixed a couple things on my A77. He might not even be around anymore, but surely there are other guys in that area, since that's where Studer had their US headquarters. Google is your friend.
