I had a tape making a squealing noise (it's my one and only TDK Low noise on 10.5" reel- I'm a big fan of Maxell UD35-180's)
Anyway, it sounded like it came from the tape guide near the right pinch roller (the 650D has dual capstans). I rotated the roller, as the AKAI service dept in Compton did a few years ago, so as to get a non-worn spot to the tape. I did not change the alignment, as according to the manual, alignment is maintained by a spring, and you turn a nut to align.
Squeal is still there. Also, if I disturb the tape, between the right capstan/roller and tape guide, it will "twist" a bit, and get misaligned. This only happens on this TDK LX35-180. My other 30 or so reels of Maxell UD35-180s don't suffer from this. Even if I try to disturb the tape path with my finger, it recovers with the Maxells. I tossed out reels of AMPEX 456, when they gummed up my other machine
(Otari MX5050BII2)
So, my questions: Is this a sign of worn out rollers? Or just one lousy tape? AKAI had this machine back in 1985, for servicing. They replaced the rollers (and gave me back the old ones). Does anyone make replacement rollers? How about capstan belts? I believe there's a belt for the index counter too.
I'm the original owner, and this machine has been very reliable.

A couple things...
If this is not happening on your other tapes, then it's either the tape or one of the reels.
You refer to "rollers". But from your description, they aren't rollers (rotating tape guides), but rather stationary guides. It was a good idea to turn it a bit to see if that would fix the problem.
Since it didn't, and your other tapes don't have the same problem, it's clearly the tape or the reel. I would try using a different take-up reel, and rewinding the tape back onto a different supply reel. Of course, if you're storing the tape tail out, and in a "played" wind, as you should, the process will be a little different, but the concept will be the same: Get the tape onto different reels.
There's an outside chance that the tape wasn't slit straight or at the correct width, but that would be pretty rare - although, I guess "rare" means it happens every once in a while. Check to see if it's just a hair wider than your other tapes.
In any case, closely watch the tape as it passes through the machine, and pay attention to where it's packed on the supply reel and on the take-up reel. You might see something that doesn't look right.
I'm a huge fan of Maxell and TDK tape, and just fyi, haven't had any problems with them.

Yes, Inmate51. I should have typed "tape guide", but had my mind on the pinch rollers. I've avoided using the TDK tape, and haven't had trouble.
I have the empty reels from the 456 tapes that I tossed, so I'll try transferring the TDK to one of them and se if the problem goes away.
I kinda like the TDK reels, with their "slot" on the hubs to use during threading.
Could well be one lousy tape. I had a similar experience with a TDK GX 35/90B, ordinarily one of my best sounding and most trusted tape formulations. This particular one not only squealed but flaked off tiny shards of oxide. The only others that squeal (routinely) on my Otari are some Quantegy 642s supposedly from the last batch that Quantegy produced.
I like the Maxells too.
Thanks, Dave.
Wished they still made those Maxells. though :(
