When did these become so crazy ridiculous?
I know people can ask anything- but on
Bay Area craigslist these are often seen at
This price. Can't imagine anyone buying tho.
Would you pay $1200 for ar3s? No thank you.
Follow Ups:
Asian buyers now pay more for the "3" than the "3a". Some feel the midrange is better.
Carefully restored AR3 and 3a, with refinished cabinets have been $750+ for several years.
Why do so many 60's cars cost more than they did then? In many cases a new car can outperform a vintage car, with the new costing less.
I just don't get it.........
Is the "kid" part of your moniker correct?
Here's the deal - It's about rarity, desirability, and demand.
I visited the old Jay Chevrolet in Upper Marlboro, MD, in the spring of 1969. Never intended to buy a car when I walked in the door. When the salesman approached he asked what I was interested in. I replied vaguely that I was looking for something that was fast, faster that what was out there on the street at the time.
He winked, led me to a flight of rickety old stairs, and showed me to the basement. Sitting there, shining in the somewhat dim light, were several brand new cars. A few Z28 Camaros, a couple of 396 Nova's, a very rare and costly aluminum engine 427 Camaro (I presently forget the option code), and a couple of 427 COPO Camaro's, a silver one and a blue one. I landed immediately on the LeMans Blue one and, to make a long story short I drove off with that COPO car for a grand total of $3,000 including tax and tags.
How much do you think it would cost to buy one of these old greats today?
Hint - $150K probably wouldn't touch it!
LS3/5As are also costly in mint condition. the AR3 and its derivatives were one of THE speakers to have and one of, if not THE first to produce deep bass from such a small enclosure.
the LS3/5As were a leap as well in soundstaging and imaging plus seeming neutrality. i wish i had never let mine get away. i could almost see me buying another pair.
...regards...tr
Even the diminutive, and excellent, KEF LS-50s cost more, and certainly won't reach as deeply into the bass.
GTry building those speakers today.
I have built similar speakers and yes you are in the one grand range.
An example is my three way version of the A-25
Woofers now $300 (amazing how the Seas A26Rex price inflate quickly once there was an interest again in that woofer)
mids Morel MDM55 $160
Tweeter Seas 27TDFC $100 (by the way one of the best audio buys in history today)
Xover parts $300
Cabinet, hardward, fill, finish, etc - say $250
So you're up to a grand and this is a DIY project with no finished cabinets.
So if you look at it that way then $1200 is about right.
Oh, there a plenty of new designs that will equal or best the AR-3's for that amount of money.
There is no beer in food, but there is food in beer.
I'd hope for a lot more today.
Better looking, better parts.
Not sure where it would be made tho.
But I do wonder- in another 50 years,
Will we still be fixing the ar's to use or
Will something of today be the classic?
Some folks like classic stuff in great shape. '62 Ferrari GTOs that sell for $50M are matched today performance-wise in acceleration and cornering by an Accord Coupe.
First generation SS McIntosh stuff like the 2105 amp and C-28 preamp still garner silly money. Would you pay $1895 for the latter turd? :)
I really liked the AR3a back in the day provided it was fed enough power. Today, there are better speakers for $1200.
I owned a 2105 and a C28, bought new from the dealer in 1971. To this day I don't really know why I bought them (seduced by the meters and the blue lights???) but I soon tired of them and replaced them with Jim Bongiorno's GAS stuff. A definite sonic improvement.
All that said, I'd like to have a pair of very mint AR3a's today and feed them with lots of high end tube power just to see how they stack up against my notoriously poor sound memory ;-)
I have a c-28 and after listening to it - I am very tempted to put a DIY 12AX7 pre-amp circuit inside - inplace of the SS stuff - but keep the blue lights....
I know it will kill the resale - but built into the cabinet with my MR74 it will look great and sound better...
Happy Listening
I owned AR3a speakers in 1971 and they were very good in their day. However, I wouldn't care to listen to them nowadays.
To each his own!
actual value, realistic expectations, worth, etc., etc.
What things actually sell for is a completely different conversation.
98% of those who know know those are overpriced and 1% is mistaken.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
This will all come to an end soon at least in the US. The 1% will be taken to task and it's Going To Be Great! I'm telling you, it's going to be great. You're going to love it.
I saw that last night. Wasn't it a member of the 1% telling us that? Regardless, maybe I can unload my AR 2ax speakers in plywood for big bucks!

Is the REAL VINAGE PLYWOOD???? ME ME ME ME!!!!
SF Bay area Craigslist is notorious for some sellers that list items at prices that are ridiculous and never sell. Sometimes they look at prices of the same item on amazon which also can have insane prices for vintage or hard to find items but the same item on ebay under "sold" usually reflects a more rational price and true value. I recently bought a camera that someone listed on an east coast craigslist for 1/4 of what the exact same camera was listed for on SF Bay area Craigslist and fortunately the seller were willing to ship it to me after not getting any responses on it after a month. The prices for too many things (especially real estate)in the SF bay bubbleland are insane despite principles of supply and demand. If it weren't for the weather, it's ALL insane.
multiple pairs too.
So funny.
I think one guy makes up silly price
And everyone comes out to follow.
