They are my first pair of bona-fide audiophile speakers. Hornshoppe Horns don't count because as far as I know, Ed doesn't advertise like Thiel or have the same production volume.
My questions are these:
1. I read differing information about the ease or difficulty of driving Thiels. Some say they are difficult and need giant amounts of power and others say they are very efficient and can be driven by anything. Which is correct in reference to the 04a only?
2. Is the "a" in 04a indicative of a second generation? The stereophile review I found online talks about the 04 sans "a."
3. I have plenty of experience re-foaming speakers and these need the foam. I bit the bullet and paid $50 (20 each plus shipping) for two surrounds. Since I'm pulling woofers should I recap the crossovers? It has been over 30 years,

So they are earlier Thiels 30 plus years old. We took in a few in trade around 2000. The foam surrounds on the woofers needed replacing. They were about $650 new.
These differ from most modern Thiels in that they are an 8 ohm load. When
People talk of Thiels as being less efficient and tougher to drive they are talking about the four ohm ones with efficiencies in the mid 80's. Some amps also dont do as well with a four ohm load that I think with Thiel is more like 3.2 ohms I think.
The 04A just has a 6.5 inch woofer and no passive radiator like the later version. Not a lot of bass. Shouldnt be too hard to drive but I couldnt find an efficiency figure. I hope they work out for you.

Thank you! I will know soon enough. The foam surrounds arrive mid week next week and I will have them done by the weekend. In the mean time I am taking them apart tomorrow. And if I can I will redo the caps.As far as amps, I should be OK. My Outlaw RR2150 and the Denon PMA-750, both of which I am going to try with these guys have no issues driving my DefTech BP2002, which while efficient, love power.
I have no doubt these will be better than the Boston Acoustics A-70 and the Klipsch KG-5 I have been playing with lately.

Thanks! for sharing.
Sharing is caring. If you find a pair of these puppies, get 'em!
I own a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE !
Nice! I will be keeping my eyes open for more of these Thiels. They are very thin on the ground though. As are all esoteric niche stereo speakers.
Keep me posted -MannyE.
I concur w/ ET.
