I was working on my wife's car last month and had to disassemble the thermostat housing to replace the outer casing. As I was sitting in the driveway dissecting it, a black, hairpin-shaped spring got away from me and went flying into the yard. I scoured the grass on my hands and knees for 20-30 minutes, but it was hopeless. The spring had buried itself in the blades of grass and simply couldn't be seen. In desperation, I got an old 12" speaker out of my junk pile in the garage. It's the type with a large ceramic magnet on the back. I tied a rope to one of the basket struts, set the speaker on the grass upside-down, and proceeded to drag it all over the yard in a criss-cross pattern. An hour later, I had my spring. This is why I never throw anything away...

I keep one on the wall near my workbench...works great for little screws and metal parts!
Hahahahaha!Don't ya hate it when that happens?
Actually, roofers have a tool designed specifically for that. It looks like a garage broom, but instead of bristles, it has a wide magnet, and a pair of wheels. They use it to "sweep" the customer's lawn to find any dropped roofing nails.
Every now and then, I do something stupid. Like when I wanted (actually "wanted" is too strong of a word) to replace a washer in the shower valve to stop it from dripping. Not knowing just how the thing was assembled, I turned the wrong part with my trusty channel-lock, "thinking" that it was just rusted tight, and destroyed the valve tubing. It should have been a ten-minute $5 project. Four weeks and $800 later, I had a new shower valve, head, spout, and ceramic tile.

When I dropped a screw through my deck. I used a Peerless soft dome magnet. Worked great and I got a few things but not the I wanted. I found out then how iron rich my soil is. That helped explain the good performance from my ham gear.

While working on a second story remodel with the window open and the screen removed to avoid the dust, I set my tape on the window sill, knowing that I'd likely knock it off which, of course, I did, 20 minutes later.

I can just imagine your neighbors watching and saying - he's really lost it. We always wondered about him, but he's now gone!
