My Von Schweikert VR-33 speakers have been great, but I'm looking to upgrade.
I'm wanting something with better resolution, better soundstage depth, and hopefully as good as or better bass.
The catch is they need to work close to the wall like the VR-33 does.
Any thoughts?

Thiel CS 2.7 or CS 3.7- will meet your needs. Only caveat, they crave high current!
This speaker line is designed by a protege of Von Schweikert, now in business with him. They even share some of the same raw speakers. The Endeavors are designed to be placed closer to the wall. There's also the VSA VR-35, a higher performing version of the 33.

Mel,
That's another great idea. I heard the E-3 at AXPONA this year in the Audio Alchemy room and really liked them. Not sure if they can be that close to the wall being rear ported. I'll need to check into that further.
On the VSA Forum the designer writes:
My inspiration for the E-3 actually stemmed from the VR-4jr. I had always loved that speaker. Especially when you looked at it's price/performance. But this is a very popular driver configuration with several manufacturers using 2-woofers, a mid and tweeter.
I wanted the E-3 to be able to work close to the walls where the VR-4jrs can be pulled out into the room. So the E-3 and the VR-4jrs are obviously very different designs even though the drivers are the same.
Hi Todd,The Tannoy Precision 6.4's I bought about 3 years ago have a wonderful soundstage with great image depth, and the ability to disappear and let the music take over. I consider excellent imaging to be one of the key factors in how well a speaker performs, and with these speakers I find I don't need to strain when listening to them in order to pick up every little detail in the program.
If you look at the September & December, 2015 issues of TAS, many of their writers were gushing over the newer, and far less expensive, Revolution XT-8F model. If so inclined you can pick a pair for less than $1,500.
Over the years I have owned a few different speakers, but if I ever upgrade again it will be to another model within the Tannoy line.
They don't seem to get much attention in the US, and that is a shame.Disclaimer: The link I attached is to a retailer that came up when I searched google. I have no connection to this place and was simply posting it as a service to whoever might be interested. If it is a violation of Asylum rules I will delete it.

Interesting idea. Never looked at Tannoy before
That's the sad part. I think most people (myself included) had never looked at Tannoy before. They are missing out on a great speaker.
The pair I bought were purchased as "factory reconditioned" from the TC Group. I learned from a phone call that they weren't actually reconditioned, but had been opened and then returned by a dealer on the east coast. I got them off of ebay for $1,280 shipped, so I wasn't too worried about not being able to actually audition them before purchasing. I figured if I didn't like them I could at least get my money back out of the deal.
Upon first listen I thought that they sounded nice, but lacking in the bass, which of course put more emphasis on the rest of the audio spectrum. As they broke in over the next few weeks things got much better. At that time I was using them in a very small (10' x 10') extra bedroom in our home.
We sold the home about 18 month ago and are now in a condo. My music room (a.k.a. 2nd bedroom) is 12.5' x 13' and this little bit of extra space is just what was needed...they never sounded this good back at the house. The trade off is I can't turn things up too loud anymore because of the neighbors being so close.
What price range are you shopping?
You might look at the Revel F208, it has "boundary" controls to use if the bass is too much when having to place close to wall or other furniture. The F206 bass is some quicker and not as ample but you want the model that will match your room volume.
With the stipulation, close to the wall placement, I recommend staying with front ported models unless it has some feature like the Revel to help compensate.
Dynaudio is a good brand for bass response and resolution.
I would like to keep it under 4K
I think KEF and Legacy are a couple of more. If you have a preamp with Audysee Room EQ (sic), that helps a lot, too
I have never heard them, but there is somebody selling Wharfedale Opus 2-3 towers (new) for very large discounts on Boston Craiglist. He has been selling Wharfedale products on that site for quite a long time, he seems legit. Anyway, I was tempted to buy a pr until I read that they have to be 2-3" from the wall, which won't work for me. The reviews were good though. That may be something to check out. I don't know of any other speakers that go against the walls. But I'm sure other inmates will have suggestions. Good Luck!!
BTW, they list for $7000 and he's asking $2250. If you can't locate them on Boston Craigslist. I have his name and number.
