I have no interest at all in trying any different speakers after living the past 4 years with my Reference 3A DeCapo I speakers.
Is there a better measure of speaker value? If there is I don't know what it is.
Previous speakers through the years (starting from earlier to more recent)
Jbl L-40 (1970)
Boston Acoustics A40 (1980s and 1990s)
Boston Acoustics Linnfield VR (2000)
Proac D18 (2010)
Reference 3A DeCapo I (current)
Prior to the DeCapo, the Proac were by far the best

back in 1982 or so. I had been thinking of getting BBC LS3/5as based on JGH's Stereophile review but then I heard a pair of Quads. Gone through 5 amps, 4 preamps, 6 turntables, 3 tonearms, 3 tuners, 3 CD players, only the speakers have remained the same.
Audiogon Bluebook?
Nah - it's what you can sell them for that counts. Personally, I like owning gear for a decade and being able to sell it for more than I originally paid. Sweet.
in 5 years you will be due for another. I dont see how you smartly keeping loudspeakers about and not upgrading is a true measure of speakers value just that your getting the most out of what you buy.
to me, how much i love a speaker depends in large part on the room i have them in. past: AR90s, Aerial 6, Dali Helicon 8s, Eggleston Andras, Decware ERR's, Golden Ear Triton 7s, now Devore 8's.
I had the Aerials, Dalis and Egglestons in a large room and enjoyed them all. I now have a small room that required nearfield listening and between the latter 3, the Devores hook up with that room the best, far and away. I The Golden Ears sounded killer at the dealer in a larger room, but just did not translate that well into my room. No problem, enjoyed them for 6-8 months, found the Devores and really love them. Also have an old PSB sub in the system as well. They really sound like music to my ears.
Whatever works, right?

Were the Decware ERRs that you mention a better match for a smaller room, or did you just not get the best from them?
The reason I ask is, I have the ERRs and really enjoy them.

I have had a pair of KEF Reference 1s for about two months. I am now convinced that a high value speaker does not patronize either the music or the listener.
after about 20 months with Reference 3A Dulcet.
Had been using the Trente for over four years previously.
They aren't going anywhere again UNLESS I get the opportunity to run some... DeCapo.
Even then they would only return to storage.
Sold the Dulcet. Great speakers but the Trente have a bit more... magic.

...love mine too. Bought a used pair 8 or 9 years ago to replace JMR Twins Mk2 (about 15 yrs old). Still have both (just can't part with the Twins), recently put the Twins back in the system and enjoyed every minute. Returning the Trentes to their spot made me appreciate the qualities of both a bit better. Twins are like a comfy pair of slippers, everything is of a nice warm piece. The Trentes open things up to a noticeable degree, but both satisfy. Thinking about auditioning a pair of the DeVore O93s, but they'd have to really knock my socks off, esp considering the price.

Once you have a set of speakers that eliminates any lust for another set even after a decade, you have that true sense of value.
Like a faithful marriage.

.
Lust about speakers. Not anythjng else.
I bought my Audio Note J/Spe back in 2003 after a decade of trying most of the major lines. I became a reviewer and 6 years later and having moved to Hong Kong and hearing most of the minor lines as well - I ended up buying the AN J's bigger brother in the AN E (and really only to be slightly different in not buying the exact same thing twice).
Back in 2003 I bought the AN K/Spe - my runner up FWIW was the Reference 3a MM De Capo!! A mighty enjoyable speaker. Personally I preferred those versions without the BE tweeter.
Every time I think of buying a new speaker. I put on one of my favorite LP's and listen, the feeling goes away. BTW, the speakers are vintage Snell type "J's"....
The A40's were nice little speakers back in the day.

To this day I check ebay regularly to see if I can grab a decent pair on the cheap.
Quad ESL 1970 -1986
Quad ESL63 1986 - 1994
ATC SCM50A(SL) 1994 - Now
O.K. update made durng period to the ATC to change to SL driver. Also later to update tweeter, mid unit wave guide and system port (all around 2001).
Well your current speaker was the last one Gordon Holt purchased for his own use. And I'm playinf with the SCM 40A speakers right now. And I agree ATC makes keepers.

I have owned two different speakers in the main system since 1982. And they were just variations of ones I purchased in '77. The first lasted twenty-three years until I heard the present ones.
While I just upgraded the panels on my current ones, I cannot imagine a better speaker for my tastes. :)
I agree! I feel the same about my Thiel CS3.7 speakers that I've owned for just over three years. I have no interest in trying anything different.
