Trying to upgrade my son from hardwired Sonys. He has a 50wpc amp. The best I have found so far are the Klipsch KG 1.2 but they are a little hard to find in reasonable condition for that price. Any other good options?

There are a bunch of PSB Century 400s on eBay in your range. I'm a fan of PSB on the low end of the scale because they're always a good value.

I like Canadian speakers, I guess.
+2 on the Andrew Jones Pioneer's. My (11 year old) son has a pair in his room.
My son's are actually the C-22's, which are the Pioneer center channel speakers turned 90 degrees. They sound better than the bookshelf models, which he also has as his rear channel speakers.
You can find the for about $80 apiece/$160 per pair.

These come up all the time. Standouts are
L300 (very small, no bottom, but clean clean clean)
L400 L500 L600 series - increasingly full range
L700 & L800 series -- these are truly full-range, and will compete with anything; normally $400-600ish, but there is a pair of 710s on ebay that are about to go for under $300 which is a steal, and a pair of L715s at $170 with 2 days left.
All of these have sticky-dome tweeters which I love. Bottom end is always clean and fast; they just go deeper and louder as you get into the larger models. A/D/S was the U.S. company that made them under license from Braun in Germany. Always run them without grills.

Not hijack but can I ask a stupid question re ads speaker connections. What do you ads fans use . I find the push pin type on my ls300 very difficult to use as the are also recessed. Right now I'm using bare wire but I struggle ....
I replaced them with binding posts - pretty easy to do.

It's a tight fit, but works, at least if you can tolerate bananas. To use spades, you probably have to put the spades elsewhere on the back, and abandon the cut-out used for the original connectors.

It's hard to say any speaker in the super-budget price range is "best." They all have tradeoffs in the design that result in some sort of "voice" emerging. If you like that voice, you shout "It's a giant-killer!" If you don't like it, you say "That's all colorated, euchh!
My recent favorite little speaker is the ENERGY eXL-15B. Cheap. Balanced, punchy sound, a little bright. One guy give me a pair for free when I bought his vintage Denon receiver! I like that they integrated well with my subwoofer. Clean and loud with 50wpc.
I also think I'd look for (1) PSB Alpha's in their various incarnations- I remember them as having real nice solid sound, smooth and non-fatiguing, under $150 used (if you're into the whole eBay thing) and (2) Infinity Primus 150 and 160's- a little brighter but they make more of an impression with popular music, under $100 ditto.
Andrew Jones' Pioneer.
Wish I could suggest his Elac B5 but that is $225.
Best Wishes
Bill
I agree, Debut B5 great choice for the extra $75.
+1 for the Pioneer! Bought them for my nephew and they are real nice!
Pioneer SP BS 22-LR, Best Buy for $129.00, when not on sale for much less.
