I have a pair of Vandersteen 1C speakers not using them right now bought new. I use only tube amps, should I go with low power 12 watts a pair of course or go for somewhere around 18 watts or even 30 thats where I stop.
Any experience with those tube Van combo's much appreciated.

I run my 1Ci with a 15wpc 6V6 push pull amp with great success. They are in a 19 x 13 x 8 room with an opening to 16 x 13 x 8 dining room so there's a lot of square footage. I do not play music loudly any more and find that with a meter my average at listening position of 9 feet away is 65-70db with short dynamic peaks that may hit 85-90db. The 6V6 amp has more than enough power to make it sound fine in my case. I also have an 80wpc pure class-A amp that plays a bit more dynamic but does not quite get the timbre like the tube amp does.
So, if you keep levels within wattage available the 1C shine in my eyes with good tube amps. Everyone who comes by for a listen all say the same thing, "that sounds beautiful".
Even though it breaks your 30 watt ceiling, I would go with a Bob Latino ST 70 at around 40 watts per channel. ( 22 watts in triode mode though) I think the 1C will enjoy the extra juice.
Consult Richard.
i can see using a lower end prima luna integrated amp that you find used.

OR new:

another thought might include rogue audio:

these are result of some light weight searching on the net.
i might have suggested a music reference 30 watt integrated but they are few and fare between and MR is out of biz.

Stu is right. It depends. Style of music and how loud you listen is important and how "good" them watts is all figure into it. I've had 2Ci's and 3A Sigs in the past. I always felt the Vandy' s need a good 80w - 100w minimum that can double down into 4 ohms to have adequate control of the situation, but then the 1C's are not as challenging as either of the ones I've owned, and room size and spl's all play into it too. Point is, the Vandy's are very flexible and much depends.
Just a note on earlier Vandy 2c/2ce and some ci's Richard apparently had added an 8 ohm resister across the rear firing woofer. Why I am not sure, but this was in the era when Adcom and Nakamichi solid state amps dominated, and they were quite bright. The resistor pulled down the highs and warmed up the sound and balanced early solid state amps quite nicely.
Modern gear is much more balanced and if you simply remove that resister the speake is not only better balanced, but more efficient ( does no apply to 1's and other models, and no I haven't examined the 3's)
IIRC sensitivity is about 89 dB. Depending on the kid of music you listen to and the size of your room 20 watt amps can be used. I used 300B amp on mine for a while. Midrange was fabulous
The Vandersteen site has an "ask Richard" section where he answers questions like yours. If anyone would know he would.
Good luck
What Richard will tell you is to go to a dealer that has your amp (or similar) and speakers and listen.
