check out the Titus 202 thread - for $300 bucks or so get these and put in some $20 caps for the tweeter hi pass filter ...
Had you considered the Coincident HRS used or possibly the Pioneer speakers designed by TADs head honcho(name escapes me).I was told there is a new speaker in the $7-900 range.

B&W, PSB, Focal.

I own the 685 Series one. It is the worst sounding speaker I ever owned. Pathetic. I dont know what to do with it. I think it will be unethical to sell it to somebody. I may give it off free. I dont trust What HiFi reviews any more.

That bad? Then the design must have SERIOUS FLAWS. What's so bad about yours? I wonder if there is something wrong with yours. Hard to believe it could be so bad. I understand that speaker choices are very personal and there might be aspects of any speaker (and B&W speakers specifically) that some listeners would find objectionable. But regardless of whatever shortcomings they have, B&W are known to be quite well-engineered speakers with few "big" shortcomings.
Would like to see some Atkinson measurements on these things to confirm whatever serious flaw your ears have evidently uncovered.
I must take Anger management courses. Yoga is not working.
The speaker was a gift from the Bro in law so I had no chance to listen to it before it appeared here. Being a gift and the good wife listening to my comments, I had to pretend it was very good. With the Chinese dumping electronics in these parts of the world, it could have been worse.
The Bro in law bought a 684 floorstander which to my ears is as bad as the bookshelf.
Something wrong somewhere.
Cheers
Paper cones so they WILL have a nice natural relaxed sound.
Great!!!! quality drivers and parts as well.

No true pistons for you I see! Just the relaxed sound of paper relaxing.
Totem dreamcatchers, not particularly accurate but so much fun you won't care, as long as solo piano isn't your thing, they can make a Steinway sound like a pub piano but will liven up the dullest Wishbone Ash album in the catalog. They will fit on a bookshelf too.
A clue to your musical tastes might help.
Please take a look at Salk Sound speakers. Specifically, the Song Surround I. Link: http://www.salksound.com/songsurround%20overview%20-%20pricing.htmSalk is an direct to consumer speaker company. You get an incredible value by eliminating the dealer markup. You get higher quality drivers, superb cabinet craftsmanship and seamless XO designed by Dennis Murphy and Jeff Bagby.
I currently own 4 pairs of Salk speakers. My fist is the HT2-TL 2 way MTM transmission line speaker.
My next 2 pairs are 4 Song Surround I speakers that Jim Salk built for our coffee shop. These 4 speakers provide incredible sound for our 1600 square foot space. I never thought these small speakers could sound so good and play so loud without strain, i.e., after closing and during cleanup, and have so much bass. We regularly have customers --especially musicians-- remark on how great our speakers sound. Amp is Adcom 2535 and Audio Quest Dragonfly USB DAC to our Linux server running MPD.
My last pair is a pair of small computer monitors that Jim doesn't really advertise. They were only $100 less that the Song Surrounds but I purchased them because of their smaller footprint. He doesn't really advertise them anymore but they sound so good even hooked up to a vintage Harmon Kardon 630 receiver. This is what I listen to music on when the the toddlers are awake and I don't want them messing with my tube amps --which are usually covered up.
Please call Jim and have a chat. The number on his website goes right to his cell.
P.S. I did not purchase the HT2-TL sound unheard. A neighbor in my area was kind enough to open his doors to me, a total stranger, because he loved his Salks that much. After 30 seconds I was hooked and placed my order that week.

My suggestion would be Kef LS50
You're probably better off looking at speakers in that price range anyway. At some point hype has to kick in to justify a higher price. THEN actual cost/quality kicks up the price point into the next bracket.
have you considered kits? There are some fantastic kits available in that range.
Check out Madisounds two way kits.

I recommend PSB loudspeakers. I like PSB Stratus Minis which would, of course, be used and would be well within your price range. I use a pair in my spare-room system. With a front-mounted port, they can be placed against a wall or in a bookshelf, although a fairly sturdy one.
Their current production encompasses several models within your price range. I have always found them to be very neutral, listenable speakers that are a good value.

How about the new Klipsch RP-160M Bookshelf Monitor Speaker, which is 8-ohm compatible with 95-dB SPL sensitivity for $600 a pair?
There's a slightly smaller version, the RP-150M, for $500 a pair.
The Spendor 3/5 would fit the bill. I owned them a few years ago and they are an outstanding little speaker. They go between $600-$700 used. Just keep checking all the sites till a pair pops up!
