Hi, I inherited a real nice pair of KLH 23's. I'm also in the process of moving so I can't hook them up for a while. When I put them in my pick up truck I noticed they seemed to weigh a ton. I have a ton of old hifi mags but can't seem to find much on them.I do have the manual. Anything anyone knows would really be appreciated...thanks...Mark Korda

Along with other Henry Kloss designs for AR and Advent, plus a few others.
I have a classic KLH FM radio awaiting restoration if I ever find the time. While I've heard several KLH models I never owned any of their speakers. But I have owned AR and Advent and I suspect you will be pleased by efforts to restore yours.

When I got interested in music and sound back in the day, I decided to replace my existing "stereo"--one of those plasticky Panasonic things with a turntable built into the top. So I bought a second-hand (or third/fourth/fifth-hand) stereo from a guy in my dorm at college: a Dual turntable, an ancient Pioneer integrated, and a pair of KLH-23s. Hardly a fancy system--I recall that the amp was extremely susceptible to RFI, and this during the CB craze of the 1970s!! But compared to that Panasonic, I thought the sound was glorious. And I bet that it was actually pretty decent, thanks mainly to those 23s. The bass from those things was formidable, given enough current to drive them (a significant qualifier).
How I envy my younger self, starting to enjoy quality sound reproduction. Sure, I've got a much nicer system now, but back then I couldn't wait to get home to listen to music.
I wish I'd kept my 23s!
Same here! (In 1972.) With a used Scott integrated (EL 84) and Perpetuum Ebner TT. I think I may have wound up with my current speakers (Tannoy Turnberry) partly because they look like a bigger version of them. May need to undergo hypnosis to find out for sure.
Hi Doktor ,I really liked your review, and every one else too. The other thing that came with the 23's was a mint Dual 1228 turntable. It's a changer or semi automatic. There was a receipt that said 1977 with the whole lot, I think an AR table I saved might sound better with the absence of those extra bells and whistles of the Dual?...thanks for the story.....Mark Korda..PS. I had the all in one Panasonic set up too. 1977,I was 20 and the rolling train of Hifi hit me then, still hooked!
Right or wrong, we used to think of them as KLH 5s without the midrange driver.
Best regards,

Jim; I agree to a point as the 23's do have some what of a "hole" between 2500 and 5000 hz.
The 17's are a better speaker in my opinion even though they are a 2 way as well. They don't go as low as the 23's but they sound much more refined.
Interestingly, I stacked the 17's (upside down) atop the 23's and the sound was H-U-G-E and quite good. Not very practical, but I have done stranger things when better than half way through a case of beer.....

Thanks all you responders,I got some good tips and know how. With the same style drivers, not the same, but in size, these speakers weigh at least twice as much as the Dynas...thanks for all your help...Mark K
It's basically and updated KLH 6
I have a pair that are in very good cosmetic and operational condition. In order to get the best out of them you will most definitely have to replace the old caps with new polypropylene ones, as well as re-seal the surrounds on the woofers.
Re-sealing the surrounds is a simple affair; Go to Walmart and get a tube of 100% silicone tub and tile sealant (GE brand) and apply a thin bead to the inner and outer side of the cloth surround. You will then want to work the sealant into the cloth with your finger. The whole process should take no longer than 20 minutes.
I ran mine with a variety of amps, but they responded best to tubes.
There is a mod you should do if you intend to run them with SS gear but I cannot remember it now.Bold Eagle (Jerry) is the resident expert on things KLH, perhaps he will chime in.
Pictured are my KLH 17's and 23's.

Better yet, hit ebay and search for the sealant offered by vintage-ar offered for cloth surround sealant kit. He has black and clear. The black is apparently the last batch according to the ad, something about the components for it. He also offers clear that does not indicate any limited quantity. It is supposed to be enough for 2-4 12" woofers. I ordered 2 bottles not knowing how many coatings as my woofers seemed to have no coating and I also wanted to do the midranges. I used about 1/2 bottle for all so easily only need one bottle. It is supposed to be the closest match to the original formula. There is about $16 so it is not a gouging IMHO.
Also, make sure you change out the woofer gasket or caulk. By now the caulk will have dried out and will not seal and the gasket likewise. I got from a big box hardware store a closed cell draft foam kit the is 3/8the x 1/8th with an adhesive on one side. Just the right size to lay 2 strips around the frame with the adhesive against the frame. It was so easy and took about 20 minutes from start to finish with most of the time carefully removing the old caulk without breaking the baffle.
I had them sitting on top of my OLAs for a couple of days to get them to ear level but today set them on the floor with a 2" high strip of wood under the front to angle them up. Went from okay bass to oh oh. I am not a bass person being used to full range e'stats and speaker that are not bass prominent. A whole new experience, especially with pipe organs.
Mine had been recapped a short time ago as the tweeters were not working so, about the only remaining issue is whether to refinishing them.

...try here.
I think they used a 10" woofer, and the CTS phenolic ring tweeter. Not bad speakers.
