Still have my long defunct Moth Cicada's
It (looks) like they made one model - at $695. Probably not a "high-end" loudspeaker.
IMF
Metaphor Acoustics, a Northern Virginia based company that introduced its first speaker, the Model 2, late in 1993 (it was subsequently reviewed in Stereophile).
Its second speaker, the Model 5, came out in 1995 and made a big splash at the 95 Winter CES. In the June 95 issue of The Audio Adventure reviewer Tom Miiller called its sound "spell binding."
I've owned a pair of 5's since 1995 and still listen to them regularly. Indeed, they do sound spell binding. I always marvel at how beautiful is the music that comes forth from these lovely speakers.
Thanks - added. I'm just surprised that you *still* use them.
14 more - Alternate, Audio Fusion, Daber, FPS, Jupiter, Flatline, Mach 1, Icon, Red Rose, Cliffhanger, Image, Sound Dynamics, Athena and Focus (fading).65 gone in recent years, from North America. Not counting ones that attended a show or two, then dropped off (like Ryan Research and Paragon).

Todd Ryan is back in business, now called Ryan Speakers...his first set of models just out is the R-610 stand mount speakers.
Lucky You Live Hawaii
Ryan never made the list -Newly found: Ron, Vivaldi, Tonian, Advanced Ribbon, IDS, Strata, Raw, Star Sound and (fading) Omega, Hyperion. We're near 75...

and their Joule and Tesla speakers. As I recall the Joule was well reviewed and then the Tesla was pretty much panned and may have been what caused the company to fail.
Another one - thanks. 50 and counting...
Edits: 04/22/14
The company was called Vero Research but the speakers themselves were Soundwaves. Made in NY they got some creat reviews for a number of years in the 90's but seemed to be gone before the turn of the century. 5 channels of my 7.3 HT setup are Soundwaves and they are still excellent speakers, especially considering how cheaply you can get them now.
Added - thanks.
Joseph Audio products aren't close enough to count as continuation, are they?
JSE - added.
One of the first mini-Monitors from 1984 with an Arthurian name, they're gone.
Yes - but these are older cos. I was checking ones gone in the past 20 years. KLH, Advent, Rectilinear, Dahlquist could easily be added....
Allison and then Allison.
Green Mountain Audio has been pretty quiet for a couple of years but AFAIK they are still in business.
Thank you, Steve/Rebbi. Hope you are well!
We at Green Mtn. are fine, with good sales worldwide.
What we and many others in the audio industry have found, over very many years, is reviews never change sales. Ever. Of course, we should still do them, and we do have plans for more soon. Also affecting our visibility is Owners who no longer frequent speaker forums after they purchase.
We have a superb new time-coherent technology that, when my time permits, will be described on our website. But at this moment, we are moving to a new location. Several thousand square feet, as before, but with a much nicer layout, especially for our marble-casting workbenches!
Best regards,
Roy

ESP and NEAR are two others that come to mind.
Jim Schaeffer
Thanks Jim - 44 and growing. But Near is making outdoor speakers - to be clear. Still out of the indoor market.I could expand this to the 70s, 80s and early 90s - just thought a quick scan since '94. I had *no idea* there were so many.
Makes you wonder just how committed these companies really were. Even today - are they making a high-grade product ? How many more will fail ?

2 more: Warren Gregoire and Adire. 45 gone - we must be near the end...

Short lived, interesting speakers with several patents.
Thank you. This, plus 4 more I found: Roman, Artemis, Reimer and (Sunny) fading. And Wisdom is doing in-wall/on-wall these days (floorstanders available as "options").42 gone since '94 - just North America.....

Add Rectilinear Speakers to the list. Very popular in the 70's.
"Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells."
You can add:
Dahlquist
Ryan Research
Signet
Impact Technology
Paragon Acoustics
Unity Audio
Audio Concepts
Legend Audio
Taddeo
Tetra
Innersound (Roger Sanders left and started Sanders Sound)
Voce Divina
Roy Allison Labs
Panor
Fading or gone:
Zalytron
Shahinian
NSM
Thanks, seas. Let's see - Audio Concepts is now Meniscus, InnerSound now Sanders. So these don't count - their main designer and legacy products continue (like Linkwitz and Nola).NSM and Tetra are still in business...
Unity and Legend are outside the U.S.-Canada. But even here, it looks look Legend is still around....
I don't see any Google-results of "Ryan Research", "Impact", "Voice Divina", "Panor" or "Paragon" (this last one is only paired with JBL or the Volent Co.).
And Rectilinear (from stereo5) ended before the 90s - the era in discussion.
The rest I added above (plus another, DCM).
Edits: 04/19/14
Unity Audio: Originally located in Lansing MI. Made speakers during the 90's Out of business.
Panor: Did remakes of the Dyna A25 along with other Dyna products. No longer in this business.
Voce Divina: www.vocedivina.com Website, but no known current activity. Impact Technology: here's a review in Stereophile..http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/648/ Paragon and Ryan, I have to dig deeper, but they did exist. We sold them drivers. Tetra went in and out. Thought they were out, but I guess they're still kicking. As for Meniscus, it's not exactly a continuation of Audio Concepts. AC manufactured and sold finished speaker systems and competed with other OEM's. Meniscus, to my knowledge sells only diy parts and repairs drivers. There's no question that the business has changed dramatically since the 90's.
Thanks again. I guess Panors were ultimately Dynas. But I will definitely take a few more from your list.
Imagine how many globally in the past 50 years - not just North America from '93-on !!
Dennessen would have gone out of business in the mid to late 90's. His speakers were a combination of dynamic and electrostatic drivers.

Prior to John Dunlavy's death Dunlavy Audio Labs (DAL) was sold to a new owner. Unfortunately the continuation of DAL then lasted less than a year so far as I'm aware.
John's original speaker company, Duntech, continues production in Australia but there has been no US importer for years. They have added several new models but continue with three models in their Classic series, all based upon John's original designs, but "revised" over the years.
Per an article by John Marks in Stereophile a few years ago, Sony purchased a new pair of Duntech Princess speakers for one of their monitoring facilities in NYC. I found that interesting since by that time Sony had introduced their own line of "hi end" speakers.
"You can’t know what the “best” is unless you have heard everything, and keep in mind that given individual tastes, there really isn’t any such thing." HP
Just a note on (studios) using "audiophile" speakers. The high-end press mentions -instantly- when it happens - almost throwing it in our face. Like the B&W 801 (back in the 80s), Bob Ludwig using Eggleston, Rick Rubin using Legacy - these are the extreme minority.
Probably 95% of recording studios worldwide use modified horns ("waveguides") like REY, TAD, Tannoy, Meyer, etc.
But they don't tell you that.....
used Yamaha speakers! ;^)
My only point in mentioning Sony recently choosing a Duntech model as a monitor was I considered that quite an appreciation for a company who designs/builds/sells high end speakers to go to the trouble of importing a competitor brand from nearly half way around the world.
And my offering info on John Dunlavy was to clarify that while DAL is defunct, Duntech is not. Many folks have been confused over differences between the two.

A H.S. buddy had a pair of bookshelf, '77ish. Much like my JBL L46 I bought 5 years later. Never heard of DWD after that? I hope I have the name right.

Waveform Mach*. (I have Mach 17s.)
my blog: http://carsmusicandnature.blogspot.com/
Just prior to that, they'd introduced their "Mach Solo" and a bunch of other bits & pieces dedicated largely to "home theater."
I remember at their demo for HiFi '99 in Chicago, I SO wanted to hear the Mach 17s playing some decent music in a 2 channel setup. But no, had to endure some crummy organ music at substantial volume reproduced in all its 5.1 or 7.1 channel "glory." Blech!
Is Nova still in business, their website is still up.
There speakers i remember used the Scanspeak drivers in a nice cabinet.
http://novausa.com/layout.html
2 more added - Polymer and Quadrature.
Nova has no show reports for several years - in this age of (many) regional shows. With lower cost and easier travel, to these events, I say "dropping from radar".

Lucky You Live Hawaii
...Thiel.
nt
...they are still making some current models designed by Jim Thiel.
But new owners have brought in a new designer who is moving away from first order crossovers with time and phase alignment.
I guess it's all getting outsourced. depressing.
Imagine how boring the internet would be if folks were as civil here as they are in person.
ESS and Hales are back.
And Talon exists under new mgmt.
Thank you - updated.
I removed ESS. But Hales (today) is making a completely diff. type of speaker - and then for a diff. market (not purist audio).
Thanks guys - updated. High-end directed brands.
