I notice that a lot of standmounts are called mini monitors...
I know that that lable really doesn't insure that said speaker produces
a completely acurate response. You can name a louspeaker anything that sounds great, to be honest, and still not have an accurate speaker.
Then there are claims that a Mini monitor (bookshelf) can play full-range
better than (Ahem!) a floorstanding loudspeaker, the thing is you cannot defiy physics and a small cabinet with a small driver just cannot provide the same extension as a well designed floor stander.
A poorly designed floor stander will sound inferior to a good standmount, but both should perform nearly equally in every reguard if both loudspeakers are of the same quality.
I read a post directed at my system on some forum (could have been this one) that said I should sell everything and get a pair of bookshelf speakers and NO sub-woofer, and I would get "better" bass extension...
A bookshelf speaker cannot pressurize a room without a sub-woofer, and standmounts tend to roll off pretty quickly due to thier limited size.
any decent Music has a full range of sound, even acoustic pop with guitar vocals and Cajon (box drum) has sub-bass harmonics.
Follow Ups:
What such people do believe is that the best 2-way monitors are easy to place, can suit many different types of spaces, cast a very wide and deep sound stage, and can make most great music sound at least very good, despite the lack of mid- and lower-bass. In general, their lack of sensitivity is overcome on most music by their benign electrical load and phase curves.
Some are very realistic sounding, some can be romantic sounding, some can do both, depending on the make and model. So, there's room for a lot of folks with different sonic preferences to enjoy them.
Oh, Wilson Duets can be placed inside a book-shelf and supposedly not be compromised. LS3/5As don't sound that good inside a book shelf, but they can be put almost anywhere else in relation to walls and the listener and still sound good (although different).
Observe, don't think
Not all bookshelf speakers are created equal!!!

...those computer speakers are the bees knees! ;)
Cheers,
Presto
all I see is a red "x"
Sorry the pic did not show up the first try. It should be there now.
wow those are endtables LOL
Are you saying that true bookshelf speakers cannot compete with floorstanders, or is there such a thing as a defined monitor sized speaker. I myself own a couple of tweeners Klipsch Heresy Is and a little known Tannoy called the DC200 (not the best Tannoys made a last gasp of the old Gold Dual Concentric.) I have Vintage JBLs C36 and C38 Low Boys, which are kind of in that intermediate cateory. None have the bass extension of my floorstanders not even my modest VR2s. Forget about comparing them to my JM Lab Focal Electras 936s with 2 7.5 inch woofers each. Oddly my Klipch LaScalas have a 15 inch woofer as do the JBLs and niether it seems plimbs the depths of the low frequencies.
Glad you could clear that all up?
Bass is supposed to sound big. 6.5" is not a woofer size.
