Trying to get my new subwoofer set correctly and have become confused. I have a Parasound amp with both LFE and 300Hz options and a Dayton sub with both a gain knob and a frequency knob going from 40Hz to 180Hz.
The Parasound manual suggest setting the amplifier to LFE and the frequency on the sub to the highest setting (180Hz) to avoid double filtering. Or they say to set the amp to 300Hz if I want the crossover in the sub to do the filtering but they claim the amp LFE will be more accurate? The Dayton manual suggests setting the frequency knob between 60-80Hz.
Where should I start?

I would go with using the Parasound crossover as it will help assure a proper integration of the sub with your main speakers. So, turn up the sub's crossover to max (180Hz) and set the Parasound to LFE. Then, experiment with the crossover in the Parasound, possible. Start with 80Hz, the default recommendation. It would be able to have more insight if you told us more specifics of your system. Which Parasound? What are your main speakers? What is the rest of your system?

I have a Parasound AVC 1800 Preamp and a Parasound 1500 A high current amp, 125 WPC? The speakers are full range ADS L810 3- ways. The subwoofer is a Dayton Audio 12" long throw with dual ports.
I think your amp is rated higher than that for power. I have a Parasound HCA1500a amplifier and it is rated at 205 watts RMS at 8 ohms.
See page 32 in the Parasound manual and follow the instructions. Where you and I spoke of LFE, we should be using Parasound's term LPF. Also, since you cannot vary Parasound's 80Hz filter, I suggest trying the setting for your main speakers as LARGE and as SMALL. With the former, only the dedicated LFE signal will go to the sub while with the latter, all low bass is rerouted to the sub. Thus, the sub will be out of the system for stereo sources if you set it to LARGE. See what works best in your situation.
If you have surround speakers, set them to SMALL and follow Parasound's instructions for setting channel levels and delays on page 33.

Thanks Kal. Unfortunately, there is no difference in sound between the large and small settings, to my ear. My speakers are large a/d/s L810s and do handle low frequencies well, so I use the large setting.
I'm also confused about setting the sub level (gain, volume?) on the Parasound. I have it set at 10, which is the highest setting.
