Ok. I have owned a lot of speakers. The most expensive of which retailed for $11k a pair. Most have been in the $4k-$6k range. For $550 these are stupid good and a no brainer for anyone considering anything up to $1000. Bought mine used for $400. Now that I have heard them, I would have to say that as long as space is not an issue, and your musical tastes aren't primarily rap or metal, you're a fu--ing idiot if you buy anything else. After you buy these, immediately go to this link:

look for the Magnepan Tweeks articles, and do everthing he says (I did). I had Madisound build my crossovers ($150 the pair, I had mine built for biwire) and ordered stands from Myesound ($220 delivered). Now, for a total investment of under $800, I have a pair of speakers that are overall the best I have ever owned and except for ultimate bass slam and sheer volume, compare very favorably to the $11,000 speakers I owned.
I am driving them quite easily with a 50wpc tube amp (albeit very high current). Everyone who hears them is floored and I see no reason to upgarde to bigger Maggies. I highly recommend Nordost cables. At some point I will add a high pass filter cutting them off at 50hz or so and also add a REL sub. However, as modified, they do not NEED a sub; it's just a tweek.
Woohoo!
Product Weakness: | bass a little boomy, but to talk about weaknesses at this price when you consider the value is stupid! |
Product Strengths: | Incredible coherence, not fussy with program material, insane value for your $$$, easy to move around, easily upgraded with no need to buy more expensive speakers; I can tell the uninitiated they cost $5000 and they believe it! |

Follow Ups:
How much room do they need? And how sensitive are they to objects to the side?
I'd love to give them a whirl, but I live in a (albeit big) apartment.
Thanks,
MMGs should be fine with a minimum of 2.5-3 feet from the front wall. About 2 feet from side walls would be ok. Distance between speakers about 8'. Distance to listener allow about 8'.So, a room at least 14' wide by 14' deep should work (of course a square room should be avoided).
I personally find Nordost BH i/c a bit on the lean and cool (not exactly cold) on my Magneplanar 1.6QR with warmish SS. Your tube amp probably compensate for that.
Hey, Thanks for the review, I was looking for a reasonably priced alternative to the expensive boxes I have now that I'm not completely thrilled with. I went to the dealer to hear the MG12's which on paper look a very slightly bigger MMG (at twice the price). They were fantastic, so I listened to the MG1.6, they were more fantastic. I bought a pair. And listed my others on Audiogon. Thanks for the push I needed to go to the dealer. I can't wait!
MG12 is fantastic. M1.6 more fantastic. If you keeps going on like that, I am worried about you because from what others are saying, there are the 3.6 and ....... :)
Went to the audio store to purchase the 1.6's but left with 3.6's, don't go near them.
I've been curious about those speakers, and anxious to hear from someone who could provide a real world review.
WHY WAIT? MAGNEPAN MMG $550.00 NEW, 60 DAY MONEY BACK GAURANTEE. TRY THEM, YOU WILL BE SATISFIED. ARE FANTASTIC IF USED WITH SERVO SUB. MY BROTHER IN LAW AND I HAVE TRIED VELODYNE SERVO AND PARADIGM SERVO. NEED SERVOE SPEED AND CONTROL TO "MELT" WITH THE MMG SOUND. FANTASTIC.BROTHER IN LAW PURCHASED MAGNEPAN 3.6'S. ONE SHOULD AUDITION JUST TO HAVE AN IDEA OF SOUND. QUAD 988-989 ARE ALSO GOOD. BROTHER IN LAW HAS ORIGINAL MMG'S FOR REAR SURROUNDS.
I have no experience with these, but I had the chance to listen to an older Maggie, not too dissimilar in size, in a well matched but not ridiculously priced system and I have to say, that my reaction was sort of like yours. Fan-Freakin-Tastic. That is to say, these things were MAGnifiicent. If only the WAF on that pair was not in the negative numbers I would have bought them.My earlier impression of these type of speakers is forever changed.
