Konnichiwa,I occasionally look around on japanese websites and I noticed this little Amp:
Looks good, seems nicely made and it is available in both Kit Form (138,000 Yen around $ 1,300) and as Finished Product (198,000 Yen around $ 1,800) and even finished as limited edition with Globe 45's and Globe 80 Rectifier (340,000 Yen around $ 3,100)....
The DIY and "Want to DIY but scared of getting a nice result" Crowd might also get some nice ideas out of how this Amplifier is actually made...
The circuit is pretty basic, 717A pentode with Zenner stabilised Screengrid Voltage drives classic cathode biased (1k5 & 130uF) 45, Sprague (Dearborne) coupling Capacitors, ASC main PSU Cap (Polyprop) and decent Electrolytics on the Cathodes, AC heating on the 45's. All that on one nicely finished wooden plate. I love the zen simplicity. I wonder what it would sound like.I just might make a similar Amp using some 24's, an 80 and some 45's from my stash....

Nice lookin' amp!
An especially good deal when you consider it's built by Yamamoto, and has about $200+ worth of their teflon sockets in it too.now, who is the importer or how do you go about getting one...
(and who makes the C-core trannies?)
> > > (and who makes the C-core trannies?)Hi Ed,
Yamamoto sources most of their (custom) OPT's from Tamura... So they are probably Tamura, but I'm not sure....
hi Derick -thanks for the info! They do look nice, and Tamura has a good reputation, so the deal becomes even more attractive, price-wise.

Thanks, gonefishin!Yamamoto Sound Craft will be added to Venus Hi-Fi's website in another few days - and we'll be receiving our first A-08 amplifiers by year's end, should anyone be interested in auditioning one...
Any details on pricing? Kits or pre-built only?
Hi Ed,I'll be carrying both the factory-built amplifiers and the kits, although I'll be promoting the pre-built units more heavily.
I have not yet worked out the final pricing of the A-08, as there are a number of factors to consider, including the plummeting exchange rate and the cost of overseas shipping (which will probably be around $250 per unit). But I am going to keep the U.S. prices as low as possible. My best guess at this point is that the pre-built amps will retail for $2150, and the complete kits for $1550. The final pricing should not differ by more than $50 to $100 from these figures...
The Yamamoto amps - and eventually preamps - that I will be importing have been reconfigured to U.S. AC specs, and will also be grounded and come with high-quality three-prong AC cords (unlike here, most Japanese household outlets are not grounded).
I am also working with Mr. Yamamoto to establish factory-authorized warranty service here in the U.S. for domestically-purchased units. And given the cost of round-trip shipping between the States and Japan, this will be a real plus!
Very nice, has a comfortable retro look to it (transformer cover). Love the globes.
HiHow do you suppose this 45 amp may compare to other "easier 45 tube amp designs? Such as the bugle, the DRD...and some of the other 45 circuits you see on the net.
The reason I ask, is because I'll be looking to add a new amp in my system...and have been looking at 45 type tube amps. I could read schematics and solder...but I have no right designing or prototyping an amp of my own. Which is why I'm looking toward a kit or a proven circuit. How would the 717a be as a driver? How would this amp work out with a passive tx102 pre?
If you like...you can see the rest of my system at the link below.
...thanks

Yamamoto Amp's are always well received (some might say extatically) and I do like Pentode Driver stages over any triode. It's a nice looking and in general nice Kit, if you ask me and probably worth having anyway. Note that it includes 45's, which in themselves cost a lot, as well as the fabled Yamamoto Teflon Tube sockets AND Hi-B material (I guess partial nickel core) output transformers. That's a hell of a piece of kit for the money...

Billiant, I suspect.
> How would this amp work out with a passive tx102 pre?
Should work great. That is just the sort of Amp I had in mind when I commisioned the first pair of 102's from JB... ;-)
thorsten wrote;""AND Hi-B material (I guess partial nickel core) output transformers""
Hi-B material is a grain oriented silicon steel core material with no discernable (perhaps trace amounts) of nickel in it.
Konnichiwa,Thank you for the clarification. The european/UK nomenclatur I'm used to for core materials is rather different from the US/Far East one....
Hello Mr. T: I am gathering parts to build an amp using a choke loaded 56 to drive a 45. planning on using all globe tubes as sort of a retro/aesthetic statement. could you explain why you prefer pentode to triode drivers? any pentode drivers you like that can be found in globe versions?
Konnichiwa,> any pentode drivers you like that can be found in globe versions?
How about the 224 - as used in the classic 224/245/280 Loftin White Monoblock Amp?
