Homecoming show at the Fox Theater. Though they played only an hour and 45 minutes—personally, I was expecting more, but then again, the way Iggy was whirling his way around the stage and diving into the crowd, he probably couldn’t have gone much longer—the show was awesome. It was a nice mix of classic stuff and material from the (IMO) underappreciated “The Weirdness.” It was hard to decipher lyrics because of the acoustics of the Fox, but the energy of the band came through loud and clear. They played with a passion and exuberance that belied their antiquity.
Iggy, in particular, is a miracle of nature. It’s impossible to believe that the guy is 60! Stage diving, humping the amp, gyrating on the floor—you name it, he did it. The highlight for me was “No Fun,” where he invited the front rows onstage to dance and sing along. Personally, I don’t think it was rehearsed. It could’ve gone south in a bad way, but the people onstage were having too good of a time and dispersed without trouble after the song concluded.
All in all, a fantastic show. If you’re at all interested in Iggy or the Stooges, it’s definitely worth catching. They put bands a quarter their age to shame.
Follow Ups:
Iggy or Seger could release an album of armpit farting and get rave reviews. That's a fact cause I'm a Michigander and get to read the reviews and raves in the Freep and News.I don't care for either of em and get a laugh out of the writers trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.You are spot on about Iggys conditioning. For being sixty he is in great shape.
There certainly IS a "homer" mentality when it comes to the Detroit press's coverage of local heroes such as Iggy and Seger. You just have to sort through it and listen for yourself. Personally, I like Seger's and the Stooges' new efforts, but I can also see why some are underwhelmed or outright hostile. They're not to everyne's taste, but then again, NOTHING is.Iggy is a freak--plain and simple. I was a pretty good athlete in high school and college, but he does things at 60 that I couldn't do when I was 18. Not sure if it's to his credit or my embarrassment! :)
just like Sordidman......His album got ripped to shreds here in SF.....
The problem of leisure, what to do for pleasure. Ideal love a new purchase, a market of the senses. Dream of the perfect life.
Whatever he is, he's in incredible shape--and not only "for his age.""The Weirdness" is getting ripped by more than a few outlets, but personally I think it's a decent album. Certainly better than most of the pablum that passes rock for these days.

Mick Jagger
Brian Wilson
Patti Smith
All come to mind as releasing very weak crap and getting rave reviews. That a few years later the reviews seem to be amended.
PLEASE don't include Brian Wilson in the same sentence as those others. The man is a giant and his new stuff (includes the finished Smile) is brilliant.
Smile is brilliant-and its what, 30 years old, the rest of his new stuff is, by my ears, a bit lame
What do you think of the new album? Most of Iggy's stuff since "American Caesar" is pretty much a throw-away.
The new album is definitely a grower. At first, I was kinda disappointed, but it started revealing its many charms after a few more spins. The lyrics are juvenile at best, but Iggy's never been a poet laureate. Can it stand proudly among the original three albums? Probably not. But it's still a great rock album, and one that most bands a fraction of the Stooge's age would die a thousand deaths to make.As far as Iggy's solo work is concerned, I agree that a lot of his latter-day stuff is dispensible. That said, though, his last one, "Skull Ring," is excellent. It marked the official reunion of the Stooges--they played on a few songs--and that collaboration seemed to spur him on to a great effort. Well worth picking up if you don't have it.

Thanks for the review. I'm hoping to catch them here in LA, although I still need to find tickets!
