The new Paul Simon is the best sounding redbook disc I own.
Follow Ups:
...the critics seem to love it but I've only heard it once (other than seeing him perform a couple of the songs live last week) and haven't warmed up to it.
Paul Simon rapping kind of turns me off.
It does sound pretty good with a lot of interesting instruments and percussion.
I'd say my best sounding recordings are the Beatles 2009 remasters and some of Boz Scaggs latest.
I'm still warming up to StS, even though I think it's very good, but it was immediately obvious to me upon hearing it that Paul is still pushing forward musically and sonically. That's pretty rare for an artist of his longevity.
On a different note, one of the best-sounding albums I've acquired in probably the past year is BGO's double-disc reissue of three Maria Muldaur LPs: Sweet Harmony, Southern Winds, and Open Your Eyes. I've generally liked the SQ of BGO's releases, but this is the best I've heard so far. Maria is a siren with a capital "S," and this reissue brings you REALLY close to her.
...one of my favorites of hers is this later one that is more rock and blues with a terrific band.
Her voice has become deeper as she's aged.
But just ok sonics.
I listen to it probably once a month. And, yeah, the band is crack--really amazing. Her voice HAS deepened with the years--few voices don't, IMO--but it suits the material she sings now to a T. When the phrase "sultry voice" comes up in the 'ol Google search, Maria's name should be one of the first hits. I dunno, but her voice just does it for me.
I bought the vinyl which was recorded hot and has sibilance issues. Wow, is it one loud album. Maybe strong on compression but I haven't looked a the peak levels digitally.
I'd say it is interesting but not great.
I have noticed that it's recorded hot (I have the CD), but for me, the music is so good, it's not particularly distracting. I can listen through the flaws.
