This song has been covered by Clea from Brisbane for the soundtrack of the new series The Kettering Incident with Elizabeth Bebicki, but this original from Tommy James and The Shondells, could almost have come off the Velvet Underground's Loaded.

Joan Jett did an excellent cover.
Although it transmutes... and is... WOW!

The Tommy James original, which I really like, was a little before my time. I grew up with the Joan Jett cover, so I have a soft spot for that version.
Interesting comment about the original fitting well on the VU's Loaded. I had a similar thought a few weeks ago when listening to the song in the car. Put Doug Yule's voice on it, make a few slight changes here and there, and it would have fit.
Was this the first psychedelic song to get a lot of AM play? Maybe, it was Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction."
"Itchycoo Park", by Small Faces beat it by a year
"Psychotic Reaction" came out in 1966, "Crimson and Clover" in 1968, I think.
I believe Psychotic Reaction predated Crimson and Clover by a couple years. Also, the version of Crimson and Clover that appeared on AM radio (at least in the Philadelphia area) was a shorter version of the original, with the psychedelic guitar cut out.
What's the fun in that? All that lovely Fender amp vibrato and reverb at "10" gone from the song?
Ever heard of Sun Ra? Kinda crazy mind bending song from early 1960s.
I was lucky enough to hear Sun Ra a few times while in medical school in Philadelphia in the mid '70's. He occasionally gave free concerts at a local park and would appear at some of the smaller clubs. Always a very fun vibe around his appearances. Thanks for reminding me of that time.
