anyone rocking this new release?
Follow Ups:
Hey Fantja,
I picked it up on vinyl yesterday as I went out and got into the rsd madness.
Have not spun it yet but as Santana's first through third sound fantastic to me so I am very much looking forward to throwing it on the table.
Lots of nit picking going on here-of course they sound a little different but who doesn't after all the years? The lyrics are not real strong but that was never a strong point with the band anyway-but they do sound really tight and energized for cats who haven't played with one another for ages. Enjoy for it is-NOT for the past you long for.
I am stuck in the past in the best possible way. If your going to name the album Santana IV, does that not, at least invite comparison? The first 3 Santana albums are stone classic and I am happy to be stuck with them.
I also buy a slew of new artists as we have a public radio station (KNBA 90.3) that plays fantastic new artists and I somewhat keep up.
Hell, I had not listened to it when posting but really did enjoy it when I spun it the other night. Glad your worried about my timeline.
I have it. Just one complete listen. It has a number of tracks that remind me of the old Santana but also tracks that are different. I am mildly disappointed with it. Recording quality is excellent. I would have preferred more Carlos and less Neal. It might be my expectations coloring my opinion.
...Amazon delivered it on Sunday.Overall I like the music and there is a little bit of everything. Like others here, I'm glad to hear Gregg Rollie back on keyboards.
As far as the recording I'm a little disappointed - it is clear and not too loud or compressed but has a slight electronic edge rather than an organic sound, if you know what I mean.
Somehow Boz Scaggs and Bonnie Raitt, for example, always manage to get a more organic sound.

I agree about the sonics. Did you make it all the way through the album? I could easily cut 6 songs and be very happy with it. I am also a fan of Gregg and thought his instrumental contribution was excellent.
...I made it through most of it and listened to the first parts of the last 3 cuts.I will listen again tonight with more time (no Warriors playoff game) and hear it all.
I think by the third Santana album I no longer liked every song on it, unlike the first two.
I was hoping for more of the Latin-oriented percussion from the first album - which I thought set Santana apart - and there is a song or two on this one reflecting it.
If I find an album today with 3 songs worthy of my iTunes (and iPod) then that's a big score for me.

... across the street from original Tower. As moi was gettin' into hooptie, dude honks & points to his copy of Santana IV! Has a mostly Super Natural vibe, although a bit of Caravan Serai (their last album together before Rolie-n-Schon left to start Journey) sneaks through on "Fillmore East" & "Forgiveness". 73s para Sactown
Is IV original new material?
Yes,most of the original members reunited recently.
Thanks Mike B, I suspect it will impossible to compete with any of the first three and Abraxas takes pride of place but all three are frequent spins at the shack for the last WHAT 40+ or more years.
I am happy to have picked it up. Got the RSD copy of the Doors - Live at the Aquarius Theater, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and the new Wolf Alice record that the store was spinning. Only heard two songs on Wolf Alice and liked them so threw it in the haul.
Happy Listening.
You are right Steelhead. I am comparing it to three albums considered to be excellent and that stand the test of time. I hope others will not be put off by my comments. Just my honest initial reaction.
Pretty impressive that these guys are still alive and playing!
until 18 minutes in. But man, Carlos really lights up when Neil arrives.
They sound great with the old stuff - that's a WHOLE LOT to do with Rolie.

was at Stanford. Neil had just turned down joining Eric Clapton, I think he was 16. I shot this from the stage.
'cause I can't find a store close by that sells CDs! ONLY LPs and I want a CD of it.
My impression listening to it on youtube was that it's too long, with some unnecessary (IMO) filler.
Still looking forward to hearing it on my system at volume.
May have to burn my own, edited version...

No worries, I totally get it as I am a dinosaur and still BUY my music.
Happy Listening!
It is long IMO. I am thinking about making a playlist with the songs I think honor the original Santana band. Then, it was a band. Now, too many cooks in the kitchen on some songs.
...and much more famous than when he first played with Carlos.
He had a pay-per view wedding in SF at the Palace of Fine Arts in 2013.
If that's not enough, he sued the city afterwards and won $290,000 last year.
He was 15 when invited to play on Santana 3. Egos can be a bad thing.
