I heard that line in this song back in '68, while working at my college radio station. I thought it was such a strange and wonderful line for a pop song that I really started to pay attention to the Kinks. That attention has been rewarded many times over.

this in SF, one of the very best musical treats ever. Made all the better because Ray Davies' form of insanity happens to parallel my own.
I always preferred the Kinks to the Who for the sly songwriting and very sharp poking of the societies mores and codes.
I think I saw show that when he was Phoenix. Was that where he sat and told stories and sang songs? Sometime in the 90's? Whenever it was, it was fantastic. I agree that Kinks songs could be fantastic capsules of everyday life.
