I am not familiar with that band but can dig having a spiritual awaking with some rock and roll. I did a similar deal with these guys several months back
Funny you brought this up. I also had an ethereal moment this past weekend after listening to "Second Helping".... WOW, what a great album! I know this sounds funny due to their popularity but Ronny Van Zant does not get enough credit for his writing. They are sooo much more than a red neck party band.
I have always loved the songs "Working for MCA" and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew", but I never put the two songs together. MCA is the last song of side one and Curtis is the first song of the side 2. Duhhh... this is Ronny baring his his soul and thoughts about the music industry and the contrast of making music for sheer joy.
MCA is LySy at full throttle with 3 lead guitars and horn section that just pins your ears back. And BCL is the sweetest ballad and the most beautiful slide (Rossington?) you will ever want to hear.
If you can get past the anthems and pay attention you realize they are covering a lot of issues including drug abuse, greed, racism, politics. In this respect, they remind me of Marvin Gaye laying these really heavy issues on you wrapped up in the most beautiful melodies that it never comes across preachy. Both are feel good music, but if you want to pay attention, these writers will get you thinking. Which in my opinion is the highest form of artistry.
Too bad the pre-crash catalog is so small.

Yep, Only three or four albums. I stopped buying after the plane went down. I had a Rossington Collins Band album but it has gone missing.
I've got two Rossington Collins LPs - both of which are good. Of course Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the more tragic storys in rock history. For Allen Collins it only got worse....
