The problem with your argument is that the placebo effect is not always in effect. Otherwise we would never progress in this hobby. Furthermore you might be humbled in blind wine tasting tests but more expert tasters probably less so. Just because you can't tell the difference doesn't mean there isn't one. Same in audio. Besides, there are ways to minimize the influence of any type of bias.

I've been to a sommelier tasting course and so called experts from the industry were humbled, quite funny. Yes there are people who know what they talk about but they are few. It would be interesting to test audiophiles, maybe there is such an experiment. I often wonder when I look at the prices of cables that a person can tell the difference between a rhodium plated AC plug with solid silver contacts and one made of 99.99999% copper with rhodium plating. The industry I am in deals with wiring and the processing of terminals. I have yet to read about how the high end audio cable suppliers ensure a perfect connection from wire to connector. They usually go on about plating and make up of the wire or cable maybe the shielding (if they believe in it). The only company that I am aware of that even mention the importance of the connection is Blue Jeans who use a Sonobond ultrasonic welder to facilitate a perfect connection. Maybe there is someone who can hear a good crimp after all?
I can say with a high degree of confidence that most high end cable manufacturers are well versed in the importance of cable connections and welding, etc. Furthermore I suggest you Google research let's say Audioquest, the dude from NASA Jena Labs, Purist Audio, Analysis Plus, Nordost, and the guy from NSA (Shunyata) and High Fidelity, and Siltech, and Anti Cables, and...etc. See what they say about their techniques for making connections. As I recall they actually tell you their methods since, you know, they wish to impress upon you their expertise. You don't really think these guys work out of their basement, do you?

Second note;
wonder what happened to the OP ? Laughing...
Our hope is these guys, like of many of the other greats in Audio, did start from their garage.
