"I thought you were bringing the test eqipment.""Ah crap, I thought you were".
"Ah well, I guess we'll have to hook it up and have a listen."
{both objectivists break into peals of laughter and nearly fall on the floor but eventually regain composure}
"Damn Man! that was funny!"
"I try... let's go grab a beer."
"After you."
Follow Ups:
BAD Presto. BAD!Oh well.
Maybe a little humor is a way we can look at this never ending debate and avoid a lot of hostility.
A wise man I know always says "Never lose the ability to laugh at yourself.", which is a very popular mantra with me.
But hey, it was funny over on General, so why not here? :)What I think is great is that both sides provide laughs for the other. No one is learning anything but at least we're all laughing!
Then listening and/or analysing music together??Astonishing!
I may get a Nobel Peace Prize yet... or at least be crowned Asylum Nutcase of the Month...
There is some valid psychology here though. When you approach a subject with a light heart and poke more fun at yourself than at your opponent, well you could get eaten alive. But sometimes, when people see that you are disarmed and somewhat playful, they might decide you are fun to play with...
It's like a dog on his back begging for a belly rub. Even a larger and normally intimidating dog is somehow less imposing in that particular position...
So there is my advice. Next time you're in an audio room and the tension levels rise, just lay on your back on the floor and ask for a belly rub.
> Then listening and/or analysing music together?? <One thing we all agree on is music is the most important part of our hobby.

Much better technique than what I use which is to play something like mid-period Albert Ayler at earsplitting volume. It tends to bring people together in the form of screaming "TURN IT OFF!!!!". But it does tend to raise the tension level. :)
Kerr:Whether we're buying equipment to listen to music, or buying music to listen to equipment (ha ha ha), in the end, we all need music and equipment! :o)
Lame jokes that wouldn't offend Pat Boone have replaced your usual "blah blah blah BS BS BS" character attacks? This is a sad day at the Asylum.
I DEMAND you stop this "new you" right now!
If you ever participated in an objectivist double-blind speaker cable test, as I have, then you'd know that the cables were compared with a pure A-B volume-matched subjective audition.
I know subjective audiophiles prefer to compare two comnponents playing music at different volumes... but how can one be sure the A-B volume difference isn't the only thing heard?.

They also like to be able to see what cable is in use ;-))

Nice to have you back and that semi-polite imposter thrown out of here.

A deacon in the Church of Divine Objectivism and a priest in the catholic church.Priest to deacon: In your objectivist religion, is it true that you are not allowed to listen to audio gear but must measure it instead? We listen to music through audio gear at our church.
Deacon: Yes, that is a basic tenet of our religion.
Priest: Have you ever strayed from the belief, even once, and actually listened to audio components?
Deacon: Yes, once I strayed and listened to audio components. But tell me, don't you have to be celibate to be a priest?
Priest: Yes, that is a basic tenet of our religion.
Deacon: Have you ever strayed and had sex with a woman?
Priest: Yes, once I strayed and had sex with a woman.
Deacon: Hmmm... sure beats listening to audio components, doesn't it?
