Hi guys,
I posted a thread over at General Asylum seeking suggestions for an audio setup for under $1000.
Many of the replies suggest active monitors, which I admit I've been looking at as well.
How do active studio monitors work in a living room environment for two channel audio? And some TV/movies (will be plugged in to the TV)?
I was previously looking at the Audioengine A5+ given the attractive pricing which would allow me to get a DAC to hook up to my Mac - probably wirelessly with an Airport Express.
But these are bottom of the heap and not pure active monitors.
Was told to look at the likes of the Adam A3/5/7 or the Dynaudio BM5/6 etc. Saw a couple of Youtube videos on some Genelecs which sounded amazing even through Youtube but man those are pricey.
Please do provide me with suggestions on what I should audition guys?
My musical tastes tend towards 50's 60's Jazz but I do listen to modern music occasionally.

And certainly in your price range at $300/pr.

Check out these JBL's with built in DSP. You might be able to get the smaller ones for $1000.

Listen to the various KRK and Mackie models.Be aware that all small 2-ways will benefit from the addition of subs.
You might consider posting this question in the Speaker Asylum.

Paradigm is also 'on the list' to audition.
They are making 'powered Atoms' for 500 or 600 / pair.
Very nice and may be just the ticket.
Too much is never enough
I am using Dynaudio BM5A Active monitors in my living room. The sources are a Technics turntable and Oppo BD83 universal player. I control the volume using a Placette passive pre. It sounds amazing in my open ceiling living room....Im done with tubes, seperate power amps etc...for me the Dyns are a clean an accurage picture and the Passive pre does not seem to impart any color...it simply controls to the voume. Its a large room but I listen nearfield, with the equalaterial triangle being about 7 feet.
I listen to a lot of Blue note Jazz SACDS and couldnt be happier with the setup...

1) this is not a small room, an A5 will not do at all
2) Turn your sofa around so it is facing the back wall, have the speakers fire towards the dining room and listen to them in the near field
3) why powered?
Powered lets you have the exact right amplification for each speaker. Some like the Yamaha Studio monitors which I found used, are bi-amped. That means each speaker has its own amp and prevents crossover. A two way active speaker system needs a powered sub also. This will fall well within a thousand because you do not need to buy a separate amplifier.

By the way, this is my living room...

You have to go with what you hear. I never considered putting the speakers across the short side of the room. But one thing that I do, that I have not seen done by anyone else, is I put my near field studio monitors on lazy Susan's on top of my speaker stands. A set up like that might give you more flexibility in the dining area. Because you can easily turn the speakers in that direction.
They cost about $5.00. If you don't like the sound I am sure you can find other uses for them.

They work great, that is what they are designed to do. See what is available pre-owned in your area.

For the most part they aren't designed for far-field listening in a large room and would not work out well IMHO. If you want cheap AND powered you would be better off with some powered PA speakers:http://www.sweetwater.com/c134--Active_Powered_PA_Speakers/low2high
...IF you can find a pair that sounds good, integrates OK at the listening position and fits in with your decor.
